For some of us, that curiosity evolved into obsession.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now that UFOs and ET are no longer taboo, where in America might you feel most \u201camong friends,\u201d human or otherwise?<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnlove.com\/\">Lawn Love<\/a> ranked 2022\u2019s Best States for UFO Fans.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We pored over countless X-files \u2014 sightings data, communication tower registrations, Air Force base listings \u2014 to determine which of the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia are hotbeds of extraterrestrial activity. Is this outcome a surprise? We know <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/culture\/23272728\/nope-review-explain-spoiler-peele-saucer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">what Jordan Peele would say<\/a>.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Golden State earned nearly 70 out of 100 possible points, over 26 more than silver medalist Texas. Over 15,400 witness accounts have originated from California alone, representing over 12% of all U.S. sightings and more than double the number in Florida, the state with the next highest.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s impressive on its own, but a close encounter with our \u201cCommunity\u201d data exposes a fandom of cosmic proportions: California is home to the most UFO hobbyists in the nation and naturally became <em>the<\/em> central gathering place for enthusiasts and experts. California is also the address of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seti.org\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SETI Institute<\/a> (not to be confused with <a href=\"https:\/\/siriusdisclosure.com\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CSETI<\/a>), an organization dedicated to finding life and intelligence beyond Earth.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In films, California is the setting of \u201cE.T.\u201d (1982) arguably the most important movie of the genre, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1217613\/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Battle: Los Angeles<\/a>\u201d (2011), and this year\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.syfy.com\/syfy-wire\/monsters-of-california-tom-delonge-trailer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Monsters of California<\/a>,\u201d just to name a few. Remember the airplane crash scene in \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0407304\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">War of the Worlds<\/a>\u201d (2005)? It was shot at Universal Studios in Los Angeles. Unless Hollywood implodes, California is a permanent fixture in UFO pop culture.<\/p>    <h3 id=\"birthplace-of-the-flying-saucer\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Birthplace of the flying saucer<\/h3>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ever wondered where the term \u201cflying saucer\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/nation\/a-brief-cultural-history-of-ufos-from-secret-soviet-weapons-to-alien-visitors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">originated<\/a>? That would be Washington, our 10th placer.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not only is the Evergreen State the ground zero of modern UFO history, but it\u2019s also significant for a number of other reasons. For one, the global flying saucer mania that it catalyzed in 1947 inspired an entirely new branch of scientific research, Ufology. Organizations from 911 emergency services to NASA also \u201croutinely direct the calls they receive regarding possible UFO sightings\u201d to the prominent <a href=\"https:\/\/nuforc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National UFO Reporting Center<\/a> (NUFORC), headquartered in Washington and the source of our sightings data.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To this day, Washington remains the third leading state in witness reports and the base of a large UFO-loving community (No. 7).<\/p>    <h3 id=\"household-names\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Household names<\/h3>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No other names besides Roswell and Area 51 are more synonymous with UFOs and extraterrestrial encounters. Their street cred alone justifies New Mexico\u2019s (No. 8) and Nevada\u2019s (No. 9) top 10 positions, but these UFO scenes earned their spots fairly in our ranking.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although UFO sightings are rarer here than in half of the states, residents have capitalized on the historical events that made Roswell and Area 51 world-famous. That\u2019s how New Mexico and Nevada became popular destinations for tourists (both the terrestrial and extraterrestrial kind), earning top 5 spots in our Entertainment category.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More specifically, New Mexico and Nevada are two of only five states that operate popular UFO and alien tours. Each state also boasts five attractions. That might not seem like many, but, combined, they make up 40% of all such attractions in the entire country.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next time you find yourself in the Land of Enchantment, stop by Roswell\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roswellufomuseum.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">International UFO Museum and Research Center<\/a>. Or take a road trip through the Silver State\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/travelnevada.com\/road-trips\/extraterrestrial-highway\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Extraterrestrial Highway<\/a>, where you\u2019ll encounter otherworldly landmarks, including Area 51.<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"findings\"><span id=\"surprising-findings\">Surprising findings<\/span><\/h2>    <h3 id=\"nothing-to-see-here\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nothing to see here<\/h3>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll be begging Scotty to beam you up if you go on a mission to find alien life in one of the least populated and most rural U.S. states: Maine, Vermont, Wyoming, and the Dakotas. They all crash-landed at the bottom of our ranking.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019d think UFOs would prefer to visit states where they\u2019re most inconspicuous, but Rural America generally ranked low in sightings and across most categories, with a few exceptions. Kentucky, for instance, is tops but middling at best in UFO visits. Wyoming, the most sparsely populated state, evaded the five lowest spots by offering one UFO-themed attraction, the Greater Green River Intergalactic Spaceport.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s possible that extraterrestrial activity is more frequent in these parts, but the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2021\/08\/19\/some-digital-divides-persist-between-rural-urban-and-suburban-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lack of digital connectivity and technological adoption<\/a> among rural Americans might explain the low sighting figures. Without internet or mobile devices, residents might be less inclined to report their sightings to NUFORC.<\/p>    <h3 id=\"not-alone-in-the-lone-star-state\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Not alone in the Lone Star State<\/h3>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Texans really want a close encounter of the third kind. Over the past year, residents Googled UFO-related terms an average of nearly 103,000 times per month. That\u2019s over 20,500 times more than Californians, who are the second most curious about the phenomenon.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And of all the states where UFO fans might hope to see a mysterious disc in the sky, their biggest shot is in the Lone Star State, our second best state overall. Texas dominated our Sighting Potential category, owing to its 12 U.S. Air Force bases, the most of any state. After all, Air Force bases are <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Technology\/airmen-govt-clean-ufos\/story?id=11738715\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UFO magnets<\/a>, especially if they harbor nuclear missiles \u2014 visitors from outer space seem to have an affinity for those.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Texas makes contact with our cosmic neighbors easy, too: Even though the state is significantly smaller in land mass than Alaska, it has the most communication towers of any other state, 13,900 in all. That\u2019s more than double the number in California, 6,745, a state with nearly 11 million more residents.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before all of this technology, though, an alien might have already popped by \u2014 via spaceship in 1897. Are UFOs real? Are we alone? You can take off your tinfoil hat now.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once a taboo subject, UFOs (or UAPs, as the U.S. government rebranded them in recent years) today are a top concern for Congress. That\u2019s all thanks to the media that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thetwo-way\/2017\/12\/17\/571446881\/secret-pentagon-program-spent-millions-to-research-ufos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blew the lid off<\/a> the Pentagon\u2019s secret UFO program in 2017. Three years later, the Pentagon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2020\/08\/14\/ufo-pentagon-task-froce-395683\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">appointed the first task force<\/a> \u2014 the real men and women in black \u2014 to formally investigate UAPs.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But our collective UFO craze started way before 2017. In fact, it\u2019s been 75 years since the term \u201cflying saucer\u201d was <a href=\"https:\/\/airandspace.si.edu\/stories\/editorial\/1947-year-flying-saucer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">first coined<\/a> and the military (allegedly) recovered the first alien spacecraft, along with its passengers, in Roswell, New Mexico.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since then, UFOs have been a staple of pop culture \u2014 from comics to music to TV to movies. There\u2019s even an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt11229146\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">episode of \u201cUnsolved Mysteries\u201d<\/a> dedicated to the Berkshire County, Massachusetts, UFO visit.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the full experience, you could tour those sites and many other UFO-themed attractions around the country, too. Or attend the annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kellyky.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Little Green Men Festival<\/a> in Kelly, Kentucky.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And what\u2019s Lawn Love\u2019s connection to UFOs and aliens? \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhpr.org\/environment\/2021-04-16\/ask-sam-why-are-there-crop-circles-on-my-lawn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Crop circles<\/a>\u201d have been known to grow on lawns for millennia.
