As Kopco puts it, \u201cYellow jackets cannot see in the dark any better than we can.\u201d<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He suggests a red light set off to the side. Yellow jackets don&#8217;t see red well, and any that fly toward it are drawn away from you.<\/p>    <h3 id=\"16-keep-your-distance-and-stay-calm\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span id=\"keep-your-distance-and-stay-calm\">Keep your distance and stay calm<\/span><\/h3>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plan an escape route, and stay out of the nest\u2019s main flight path, Kopco says. Work from as far away as you can. &#8220;Most aerosol cans of wasp and hornet spray have ranges of 15-30 feet,&#8221; he says.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Watch the insects. Kopco says calm flight means no alarm, circling the nest signals a threat, and wasps circling you are sizing you up. If they ram you or fly at your face, back off.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell says to \u201cavoid swatting or panicking,\u201d since flailing makes you look like a bird, the yellow jacket\u2019s biggest predator.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re stung, back off and wash the spot with soap and water. That removes the alarm pheromone that marks you for more stings, Kopco says.<\/p>    <h3 id=\"17-consider-allergic-reactions\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span id=\"consider-allergic-reactions\">Consider allergic reactions<\/span><\/h3>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 2 million people in the U.S. have a <a href=\"https:\/\/entomology.mgcafe.uky.edu\/ef620\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">venom hypersensitivity<\/a> that can make a sting life-threatening.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have a sting allergy, let someone else handle the nest, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaaai.org\/tools-for-the-public\/conditions-library\/allergies\/stinging-insect-allergy\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">carry epinephrine<\/a>, such as an EpiPen.
