The Golden City has the most patisseries and coffee shops per square mile in our ranking. There are also award-winning pastry chefs serving up delicious croissants and other baked goods across the city.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other big cities puffed up to the top, including New York (No. 2) and Chicago (No. 3), which tied for first place in patisseries recognized in \u201cbest pastry\u201d lists. NYC has the most James Beard Award-winning pastry chefs, with Chicago a close second.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the West Coast, Seattle (No. 4), Los Angeles (No. 5), and Portland, Oregon (No. 6), each have award-winning patisseries and high local interest. New York is full of iconic pastries, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dominiqueansel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dominique Ansel Bakery<\/a>\u2019s Cronut to Portuguese past\u00e9is de nata at <a href=\"https:\/\/joeybatscafe.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Joey Bats Cafe<\/a> to extra cute macarons from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bibbleandsip.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bibble &amp; Sip<\/a>.<\/li> <\/ul>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Chicago:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yelp.com\/biz\/pan-artesanal-chicago-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pan Artesanal<\/a> combines Mexican and French flavors, resulting in one-of-a-kind treats like the cajeta croissant, tiramisu churro, and chilaquiles croissant. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ayapastry.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Aya Pastry<\/a> is spearheaded by a Michelin-starred pastry chef, Aya Fukai. They sell tarts and breakfast pastries, as well as Samoa cakes, Paris-Brests, and Shokupans.\u00a0<\/li> <\/ul>  <\/div> \t\t<\/div> <\/div>   <h3 id=\"sweet-standouts\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sweet stand(outs)<\/h3>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few mid-sized cities rose in the ranks, landing in our top 20 thanks to high-quality pastries, \u201cproofing\u201d they have what it takes to please pastry lovers.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Charleston, South Carolina (No. 10), Boise, Idaho (No. 15), and Bridgeport, Connecticut (No. 18), all tied for No. 1 in share of highly rated patisseries. Charleston takes sixth place in Quality. Boise and Charleston also have patisseries recognized by \u201cbest pastry\u201d lists.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For four consecutive years, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.subrosabakery.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sub Rosa Bakery<\/a> in Richmond, Virginia (No. 16), was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtvr.com\/eat-it-virginia\/sub-rosa-best-breads\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">semifinalist<\/a> for the James Beard Award\u2019s \u201cOutstanding Baker\u201d category. They also offer gluten-free cakes, among other bakery items. <a href=\"https:\/\/macaroonboutique.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Macaroon Boutique<\/a> serves up traditional French fare, such as fresh croissants, macarons, and brioches.<\/li> <\/ul>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Boise:<\/strong> Full-service bakery <a href=\"https:\/\/pastryperfection.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pastry Perfection<\/a> sells a wide variety of pastries and baked goods, including fritters, \u00e9clairs, donuts, and dessert breads. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.janjou.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Janjou P\u00e2tisserie<\/a> is a James Beard semifinalist, creating artisanal pan au chocolats, bostocks, and kouign amanns, among other delightful breads and sweets.<\/li> <\/ul>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Bridgeport:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yelp.com\/biz\/del-prete-italian-pastry-bridgeport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Del Prete Italian Pastry<\/a> has been tingling the city\u2019s tastebuds for decades. They specialize in Italian treats, such as handmade cannoli, zeppole (Italian doughnuts), and sfogliatelle (lobster tails).<\/li> <\/ul>  <\/div> \t\t<\/div> <\/div>   <h3 id=\"tartless-towns\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tartless towns<\/h3>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some mid-sized cities and suburbs crumbled to the bottom of our ranking. Places like Kansas City, Kansas (No. 200), and Palmdale, California (No. 199), have low scores across the board, with little access to tasty bakeries and patisseries.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other cities, such as Pomona, California, Jackson, Mississippi, and Rockford, Illinois, lack access to delectable pastries, too. These cities \u201cdough\u201d not seem to have affection for baked confections, as indicated by low local Google search volume.<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ask-the-experts\"><span id=\"expert-take\">Expert take<\/span><\/h2>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From strudels to chouquettes to pan dulces, there are scores of pastries with origins from around the world. For example, we have seen smaller serving sizes of desserts to reduce calorie intake while meeting consumers&#8217; fitness goals.<\/p> <p>New flavors and &#8220;newstalgia&#8221; (updated classics) are also driving consumer interest. Having new twists on traditional recipes allows consumers to try unexpected flavors while keeping the classics. Think about croissants with apple pie filling and apple cinnamon white chocolate coating. It was amazing.<\/p>             <\/div>            <\/div>          <\/div>              <\/div> <\/div>   <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"methodology\"><span id=\"behind-the-ranking\">Behind the ranking<\/span><\/h2>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For each of the 200 biggest U.S. cities, we gathered publicly available data on the factors listed in the table below.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We then grouped those factors into three categories: Access, Quality, and Popularity.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next, we calculated weighted scores for each city in each category.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, we averaged the scores for each city across all categories.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The city that earned the highest average score was ranked \u201cBest\u201d (No. 1), while the city with the lowest was ranked \u201cWorst\u201d (No. 200).
