The same late-summer-to-early-fall window is also the best time to <a href=\"https:\/\/lawnlove.com\/blog\/what-is-overseeding\/\">overseed an existing lawn<\/a>.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Warm-season grasses like Zoysiagrass grow only in the warmest pockets of the Northeast and go down in late spring to early summer, after the last frost. It&#8217;s also the best stretch for overseeding.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pamm Cooper of The University of Connecticut Home and Garden Education Center says this monthlong period is ideal.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Soils are warm enough to ensure optimum germination, and roots will develop good depth and biomass before the hot weather arrives the next summer.&#8221;<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Spring seeding is almost always a failure in New England due to the shallow roots of young grass plants and hot soils coming too soon to expect a good survival percentage of spring-seeded cool-season grasses,&#8221; Cooper added.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zoysiagrass is Connecticut&#8217;s one warm-season option you can seed in fall and spring.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Zoysia is a warm-season grass and grows when soils warm to 60 degrees and above. The soil is still warm, the air is cooling, and there&#8217;s enough rain to keep the seedbed moist without drowning it. This is also the best time to overseed.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You could seed in spring instead, in early May to June (or late May to June for Kentucky bluegrass or tall fescue). Fall is still better, though, because you&#8217;ll fight far fewer weeds.<\/p>    <h2 id=\"3-the-best-time-to-seed-in-massachusetts-\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span id=\"the-best-time-to-seed-in-massachusetts\">The best time to seed in Massachusetts<\/span><\/h2>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Massachusetts, seed cool-season grass between the third week of August and the third week of September. There is less weed competition, cooler temperatures, and reliable rainfall. You can push to late September or October, but conditions are less favorable.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The further you move past that ideal window, the more that factors like decreasing temperatures and shorter days begin to work against you\u2026 whether you are seeding or overseeding,&#8221; says Extension Specialist and Group Leader Jason D. Lanier from the University of Massachusetts.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overseeding is a bit more forgiving.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Grasses commonly used for overseeding are also typically faster-establishing species, so they offer a bit more flexibility in the way of timing,&#8221; Lanier says.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zoysiagrass is the only warm-season variety that will grow here. It builds a dense, resilient lawn but stays green just 3 to 4 months a year. The same window works for overseeding.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you must, you can seed around early May, but only after the snow has fully melted and the forecast looks steady. Your grass may keep growing into summer, which is rarely a problem in New Hampshire&#8217;s cool climate.<\/p>    <h2 id=\"5-the-best-time-to-seed-in-new-jersey-\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span id=\"the-best-time-to-seed-in-new-jersey\">The best time to seed in New Jersey<\/span><\/h2>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ideal seeding window in New Jersey is mid-August to mid-September, for both seeding and overseeding. That gives your grass time to establish before cold weather.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zoysiagrass is New Jersey&#8217;s only warm-season option. Plant it from mid-May to June; go any later and you risk injuring it. Soil temperatures run between 60 and 76 degrees Fahrenheit, suitable for most grasses, with enough sunlight and cool air to help seedlings settle. Overseeding follows the same schedule.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mid-April to early June is the second-best time.
