What causes clumping grass?<\/span><\/h2>

While many types of turfgrass<\/a> have a spreading growth habit, some have a bunch-type (clumping) growth habit. Bunch-type turfgrasses<\/strong> grow in clumps<\/strong>, which stand out if your lawn is thinning.<\/p>
The common lawn grasses that have a bunch-type growth habit are cool-season grasses<\/a>, but some warm-season grasses also grow in bunches. These grasses are:<\/p>
- Fine fescue<\/a> (except for creeping red fescue)<\/li>
- Perennial ryegrass<\/a><\/li>
- Tall fescue<\/a><\/li>
- Bentgrasses<\/a> (can be considered weeds by some)<\/li>
- Bermudagrass<\/a><\/li>

If you mixed a bunch-type and a spreading grass on your lawn, you may see clumps of turf that can be a little distracting.<\/p>
Weeds<\/span><\/h3>
If you see strange clumps of grass in your lawn, then you may actually be looking at grassy weeds<\/a> rather than turfgrass. A common culprit \u2013 especially in hotter areas \u2013 is crabgrass<\/strong>, which grows in low clumps. In cooler climates, you will likely find bentgrass<\/strong> to be the cause instead.<\/p>
Here are some weedy grasses that form clumps:<\/p>
- Crabgrass<\/a><\/li>
- Orchardgrass<\/li>
- Yellow nutsedge<\/a> (nutgrass)<\/li>
- Onion grass<\/a> (wild onion or wild garlic)<\/li> <\/ul>
You\u2019ll need to kill these weeds with post-emergent herbicides<\/a>. Then, apply pre-emergent herbicides<\/a> in spring and fall to prevent them from coming back.<\/p>

Your soil can be overly acidic<\/a> or too alkaline, neither of which is good for your grass as it can result in nutrient deficiencies. Grass grows best in soil with a pH level of 6.0 to 7.0.<\/p>

Improper mowing<\/span><\/h3>
