Grass clippings and dirt are guaranteed, so this is best done in a driveway or another area that can be sprayed off afterward.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every time you mow, grass and dirt collect underneath the deck. When buildup is ignored, it can:<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>Cause uneven or ragged cuts<\/li>    <li>Trap moisture and lead to rust<\/li>    <li>Spread lawn disease from yard to yard<\/li>    <li>Slow blade rotation and increase wear on moving parts, sometimes damaging the drive belt<\/li>    <li>Shorten the overall life of your lawn mower<\/li> <\/ul>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regular cleaning prevents small issues from turning into expensive repairs.<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"1-step-1-prep-the-mower-always-do-this-first\"><span id=\"step-1-prep-the-mower-always-do-this-first\">Step 1: Prep the mower (always do this first)<\/span><\/h2>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before cleaning the deck:<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>Turn the mower off and let it cool<\/li>    <li>Disconnect the spark plug wire<\/li> <\/ul>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Push mowers:<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong>Tilt the mower on its side with the air filter and carburetor facing up to prevent oil or fuel from leaking.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Riding mowers and zero turns:<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong>Park on level ground, engage the parking brake, remove the key, and disconnect the spark plug wire. Use ramps or a floor jack with wheel chocks to safely access the underside. Never work under an unsecured lawn mower.<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"2-step-2-clean-the-deck\"><span id=\"step-2-clean-the-deck\">Step 2: Clean the deck<\/span><\/h2>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Expect dirt, grass clippings, and muddy water \u2014 that\u2019s normal.<\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3-regular-cleaning-most-common\"><span id=\"regular-cleaning-most-common\">Regular cleaning (most common)<\/span><\/h3>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is what I do most often to stay ahead of buildup.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What you\u2019ll need:<\/strong><\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>Gloves<\/li>    <li>Plastic putty knife or deck scraper<\/li>    <li>Wire brush or small stiff broom<\/li>    <li>Ramps or jack<\/li>    <li>Wheel chock (2 big bricks or blocks of wood work too)<\/li> <\/ul>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brush off loose debris first, then scrape away stuck-on grass. Plastic tools are best \u2013 as plastic tools won\u2019t gouge the deck or strip paint like metal scrapers can.<\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"4-hose-and-deck-wash-port-if-your-mower-has-one\"><span id=\"hose-and-deck-wash-port-if-your-mower-has-one\">Hose and deck wash port (if your mower has one)<\/span><\/h3>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some push mowers, riding mowers, and zero turns have a deck wash port that connects to a garden hose.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How to use it:<\/strong><\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>Attach the hose<\/li>    <li>Drop the deck to its lowest cutting height<\/li>    <li>Start the mower and let the water run for a few minutes<\/li>    <li>Shut everything off and disconnect the hose<\/li> <\/ul>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This works best right after mowing, before clippings dry and harden.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Never use a pressure washer.<\/strong> High pressure can force water into bearings, seals, belts, and electrical components.<\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"5-heavier-buildup\"><span id=\"heavier-buildup\">Heavier buildup<\/span><\/h3>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For caked-on grass:<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>Use a<strong> <\/strong>wire brush drill attachment where there\u2019s room<\/li>    <li>Use a plastic putty knife in tight areas<\/li>    <li>Finish with a regular garden hose to wash away the caked-on grass<\/li> <\/ul>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Avoid spraying water near the air filter, carburetor, or electrical components.<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"6-step-3-dry-and-protect-the-lawn-mower-deck\"><span id=\"step-3-dry-and-protect-the-lawn-mower-deck\">Step 3: Dry and protect the lawn mower deck<\/span><\/h2>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drying is just as important as cleaning.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How to do it:<\/strong><\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>Wipe the deck down<\/li>    <li>Use a leaf blower or air compressor if you have one<\/li>    <li>Let the mower sit in the sun for 10\u201315 minutes<\/li> <\/ul>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once dry, apply WD-40 or a non-stick product like Mo-Deck to the underside of your deck and the blades. This helps slow future grass buildup and provides rust protection. (Be careful not to get WD-40 or Mo-Deck on the belt.)&nbsp;<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"7-step-4-reassemble-and-clean-up\"><span id=\"step-4-reassemble-and-clean-up\">Step 4: Reassemble and clean up<\/span><\/h2>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reconnect the spark plug wire and make sure all covers are fully clipped or bolted back into place. Loose covers can vibrate off \u2014 and if one comes loose while mowing, it will get destroyed.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spray off the driveway when you\u2019re finished. There will be grass and dirt left behind.<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"8-what-to-avoid\"><span id=\"what-to-avoid\">What to Avoid<\/span><\/h2>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>Pressure washers (can do damage to your mower)<\/li>    <li>Harsh chemicals or degreasers<\/li>    <li>Steel brushes that scratch paint<\/li>    <li>Spraying water into the air filter, carburetor, or electrical components<\/li> <\/ul>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"9-diy-your-mower-cleanup-or-hire-a-lawn-care-pro\"><span id=\"diy-your-mower-cleanup-or-hire-a-lawn-care-pro\">DIY your mower cleanup or hire a lawn care pro<\/span><\/h2>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cleaning a mower deck takes a little effort and gets messy, but it pays off.
