In fact, there are people that either don’t have the time or the inclination to care for their lawns themselves, so they will gladly pay someone to do it for them! Starting your own lawn care business may just be the key to your success. To do so, you have to be organized, focused, and efficient. Here are some tips that can help you get started!

You Need Equipment

Starting your own small business can be an exercise in restraint. You may want to go out and buy the top of the line, fanciest equipment on the market but that’s not a smart move. You definitely need equipment to get started, but it’s smarter to buy used equipment from auctions or yard sales when you’re first starting out. You don’t want to put yourself in debt before you even have clients!

Also realize that when you’re starting out, you don’t need every single piece of equipment on the market to be successful. Your clients don’t care what you use to get the job done, just that it gets done!

Once you build up a clientele and start to make a profit, budget for new equipment. After all, your business will rely on having equipment in working order, so you need to make sure you build in the purchase of new equipment into your budget.

Become a Scheduling Pro

As your business grows and adds new clients there will inevitably be scheduling conflicts. One of the most important things you can do from the outset is to never overextend or overbook yourself in a day. Try to schedule each day of the week with about the same amount of work. You don’t want to be up the creek without a paddle if a piece of equipment breaks down or something else comes up.

Also, don’t forget to schedule a day off! Many people in the lawn care business work seven days a week, but those people tend not to last doing it! Lawn care is physically demanding and you need to give yourself a break or you’ll burn out.

Financial Wizardry

Are you a financial wiz? Look, be honest with yourself – if you’re not experienced in running your own business, then you need to bring in people who are. Consult with a tax professional to help you set up your accounting system and keep track of all of your business-related expenses, keeping them separate from your personal finances.

If you want to take a stab at the finances on your own, there’s a lot of great bookkeeping software on the market you can use to help. Just make sure you choose one that’s easy to use and you strive to keep your finances organized.

Manage Your Marketing

Any business needs marketing otherwise people won’t know that you exist! Even if you have clients lined up, you need new ones in order for your business to succeed so take the leap and place an ad in your local newspaper.

You also need to create a brochure for your business to provide to potential clients. Keep them on hand to give out when you’re at community events such as baseball games, farmer’s markets, or county fairs.

And don’t forget the business cards! Keep these with you all the time and give them out to any and every one!

These are just a few of the things you’ll need to have covered when starting your own lawn care business, but they’ll get you off to the right start! Just as with any business, it will take time for you to see a profit but if you keep at it, work hard, and practice patience, you have a great chance of being a booming success!

Main Image Credit: faithie / Adobe Stock Free / License

You love lawn care and you’re lucky because there aren’t a ton of people out there that do.
