Topdressing and seeding at the same time are highly efficient because the material holds the new seed in place against the soil.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spring is a workable backup option if you completely missed the fall window. You can patch topdress at any time during the active growing season.<\/p>    <h2 id=\"3-how-often-should-you-topdress-a-lawn\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span id=\"how-often-should-you-topdress-a-lawn\">How often should you topdress a lawn?<\/span><\/h2>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For most established lawns, topdressing once a year (in fall for cool-season grass or late spring for warm-season grass) is the recommendation from extension turf specialists.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hgic.clemson.edu\/factsheet\/topdressing-a-home-lawn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Clemson Cooperative Extension<\/a> advises that \u201ctopdressing applications should be light and frequent, allowing for incremental changes to the soil profile over time,\u201d rather than doing occasional heavy sessions.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Olberding is against making this a yearly habit.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cToo much material, especially if it doesn\u2019t match the existing soil, can create layers that hold water differently and cause drainage or root problems,\u201d he explains.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTopdressing every single year can overload the lawn with excess organic matter, shifting <a href=\"https:\/\/lawnlove.com\/blog\/how-to-change-soil-ph\/\">soil pH<\/a> and trapping stagnant surface water directly around the plant crown,\u201d Santee adds.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The exception is a lawn actively being rebuilt from bare soil or <a href=\"https:\/\/lawnlove.com\/blog\/how-to-fix-compacted-soil\/\">severe compaction<\/a>.
