Before adding more, clean the lenses, replace failed bulbs with compatible replacements, and trim plants blocking the light.

Put lights on a timer or a dusk-to-dawn sensor so they come on without you remembering, and reset any clock-based timers when the clocks change.

Don’t forget the backyard

If you’re getting something from the shed or putting away the patio chairs after dinner, the porch light may not reach far enough to help. And knowing your backyard doesn’t mean you’ll see the toy someone left in the grass or where the dog went after dark.

Solar lights mounted along the fence can add some light without running electrical wiring across the yard. Choose spots where the panels get direct sunlight, and aim the lights down into your yard, not toward your neighbors’ windows.

But can you see the path to the shed and the steps off the patio? Can you see past the shrubs near your front window?

Lighting and landscaping work together here.

“If not designed and maintained properly, landscaping may hinder visibility and cause security problems,” Roswold says.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office in Colorado recommends enough exterior lighting for neighbors or passersby to see someone around your home. The light doesn’t have to be excessive.

Motion-activated lights can help at garages and side entrances. Demkovich explains why pruning also matters:

“When branches grow over the walkway, people end up stepping off it into the dark. Plus, thick leaves give someone a perfect place to hide right outside your windows. So it’s knowing where the hazards are and clearing them out before it gets dark early, long story short.”

But don’t stop with the lights. Close the garage door when it isn’t in use, lock gates and sheds, and put tools away.

A well-lit yard can support those precautions. It doesn’t make a home burglar-proof. Your local police department may offer a home security assessment or advice specific to your neighborhood.

Pets, kids, and guests

Earlier darkness can change the routine for everyone who uses your yard.

Pets: Check the gate latch and the route to your dog’s usual spot. A reflective collar or leash helps when light shines on it, while a clip-on light provides its own glow.

Kids: Make putting away bikes, scooters, and toys part of the evening routine. Check that steps and walkway edges are visible where kids come and go after school.

Guests: Walk toward your house as if you’ve never visited before. Can you read the house number? Find the front door? See the steps?

If you’re hosting a holiday gathering, move packages, planters, and decorations out of the walking route before everyone arrives.

FAQs

How much does landscape lighting cost?
Costs depend on the fixtures, layout, power source, and installation work. Motion-activated lights can do the job. Just check that they come on before you reach the steps or anything else you could trip over.

For a walkway you want lit all night, dusk-to-dawn lights are a better choice. Some fixtures have both motion and daylight sensors. Those wait until after dark to turn on when someone walks by.

Do I need an electrician to install outdoor lighting or outlets?
Some of this is easy enough to do yourself.
