The term <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/mauisoil\/a_factor_ts.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201csoil texture\u201d<\/a> refers to the size of these rock particles in your soil. It affects water retention, nutrient-holding capacity, drainage efficiency, and erosion resistance.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most common soil textures are:<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Clay:<\/strong> Very fine rock particles that stick together to form dense soil<\/li>    <li><strong>Sandy:<\/strong> Forms loose soil with its large rock particles<\/li>    <li><strong>Silty:<\/strong> Its rock particles \u2013 smaller than sand but larger than clay \u2013 form a slippery soil<\/li> <\/ul>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your soil may contain mostly clay, sand, silt, or a combination of two or three of these textures. Loam is the ideal soil texture; if your soil has it naturally, you should consider yourself lucky. Your soil\u2019s pH level tells you if the soil is acidic, neutral, or alkaline. Here\u2019s the breakdown of what each soil pH means:<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Acidic:<\/strong> pH of 0 to 6.5<\/li>    <li><strong>Neutral:<\/strong> pH of 6.6 to 7.3<\/li>    <li><strong>Alkaline:<\/strong> pH of 7.4 to 14<\/li> <\/ul>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soil pH affects how nutrients and minerals dissolve in the soil, influencing plants\u2019 ability to soak up those nutrients. Some plants prefer acidic soil because of the nutrients they need, while others prefer alkaline. Generally, <strong>a pH level of 6.0 to 7.0 is ideal<\/strong> for most plants.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Luckily, whether your soil is too acidic or alkaline, you can use different soil amendments to alter the pH so it fits the preferred range of the plants you want to grow.<\/p>    <h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"7-lower-soil-ph\"><span id=\"lower-soil-ph\">Lower soil pH<\/span><\/h4>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A soil pH of 7.4 or higher may be too alkaline for some plants. In alkaline soil, phosphorus is less readily available, which is a problem because phosphorus is one of the three <a href=\"https:\/\/lawnlove.com\/blog\/lawn-care-fertilizer-basics-what-to-look-for-in-your-fertilizer\/#2-what-is-n-p-k\">most essential plant nutrients<\/a> (along with nitrogen and potassium). Alkaline soil also may lack other important nutrients, such as iron and manganese.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have acid-loving plants or your soil is generally highly alkaline, you\u2019ll need to lower the pH and make the soil more acidic.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Organic soil amendments to lower soil pH<\/strong>:<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>Peat moss<\/li>    <li>Ericaceous compost (compost made up of acidic materials such as pine needles, oak leaves, and citrus fruits)<\/li> <\/ul>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Synthetic soil amendments to lower soil pH<\/strong>:<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>Elemental sulfur<\/li>    <li>Ammonium sulfate<\/li>    <li>Aluminum sulfate (use sparingly to avoid aluminum toxicity)<\/li> <\/ul>    <h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"8-raise-soil-ph\"><span id=\"raise-soil-ph\">Raise soil pH<\/span><\/h4>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A soil pH of 6.5 or lower may be too acidic for some plants to thrive. In highly acidic soil, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium don\u2019t dissolve well for absorption. Acidic soils also contain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fpls.2017.01767\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">toxic levels of metals<\/a>, such as aluminum, iron, and manganese.
