Maybe your container garden only grows toppings for your veggie pizza. Or perhaps you want an herb garden for the kitchen. Decorative flower pots never hurt either. The great thing about container gardens is that they&#8217;re portable. If you don&#8217;t like your container garden&#8217;s current spot, you can easily move it. Most plants don&#8217;t grow well in the shade, so look for an area that receives plenty of sunlight. You&#8217;ll also want to find a location where your container garden can be the main attraction.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you&#8217;ve found a sunny spot, keep track of how many hours of sunlight it receives a day. The plants you grow should be compatible with the location&#8217;s daily hours of sunlight.&nbsp;<\/li>    <li>Don&#8217;t mix invasive plants with other plants. Invasive plants are competitive and will weaken plants they share a pot with.&nbsp;<\/li>    <li>Take note of your container&#8217;s size and the plant&#8217;s expected root growth. Growing plants with vast root systems will be challenging if you only have small containers.<\/li>    <li>Consider <a href=\"https:\/\/extension.wvu.edu\/lawn-gardening-pests\/news\/2019\/04\/15\/companion-planting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">companion planting<\/a>. When growing near each other, some plants benefit one another while others are better off not growing together. For example, some gardeners choose not to interplant onions and beans because onions stunt the growth of beans. (Interplanting is the practice of planting different crops between one another).&nbsp;<\/li>    <li>When growing traditionally large plants, such as trees or shrubs, grow cultivars specific to container gardening.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li> <\/ul>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pro Tip: <\/strong>A popular flower arrangement involves a \u201cthriller, filler, and spiller.\u201d The <strong>thriller<\/strong> is a tall focal point that grows from the container&#8217;s center. <strong>Fillers<\/strong> are mid-sized, mounding plants surrounding the thriller and hiding the soil. <strong>Spillers<\/strong> are typically trailing vines that cascade down the container&#8217;s sides.&nbsp;<\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"5-step-4-buy-potting-mix\"><span id=\"step-4-buy-potting-mix\">Step 4: Buy potting mix<\/span><\/h3>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next, you need to buy your potting mix. In most cases, an all-purpose potting mix will work just fine. But if you have a plant that requires excellent drainage or a specific pH level, use a potting mix that satisfies your plant&#8217;s particular needs.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When shopping for your potting mix, avoid grabbing a bag of potting soil. Although these two terms are often used interchangeably, they aren&#8217;t the same thing.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Potting soil<\/strong> may or may not contain soil, while potting mix contains no soil. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lawnlove.com\/blog\/soilless-potting-mix\/\">Potting mix<\/a> <\/strong>is sterile, which means it won&#8217;t introduce fungi, diseases, or other pathogens to your container plant.&nbsp;<\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"6-step-5-cover-the-drainage-holes\"><span id=\"step-5-cover-the-drainage-holes\">Step 5: Cover the drainage holes<\/span><\/h3>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t want soil draining out of your container garden after each watering.
