You can topdress your entire yard or focus on bare spots, combining it with overseeding to fill them in.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Topdressing is the best way to rejuvenate your lawn without pulling up all your grass (which is a pain) and starting over. As your grass grows through the layer of topdressing, the organic material is incorporated into the soil beneath it, adding nutrients and improving soil quality.<\/p>    <h2 id=\"1-what-materials-can-you-use-for-topdressing\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span id=\"what-materials-can-you-use-for-topdressing\">What materials can you use for topdressing?<\/span><\/h2>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are 3 options for topdressing materials:<\/p>    <ol class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Sand<\/strong> is commonly used on golf courses because it improves bounce and resiliency. For home lawns, sand should only go on soil that\u2019s already sandy.<\/li>    <li><strong>Topsoil<\/strong> helps <a href=\"https:\/\/lawnlove.com\/blog\/how-to-level-uneven-lawn\/\">smooth out the ground<\/a> but doesn\u2019t contain much organic matter. It\u2019s an inexpensive way to make your topdressing material go farther.<\/li>    <li><a href=\"https:\/\/lawnlove.com\/blog\/how-to-use-compost\/\"><strong>Compost<\/strong><\/a> is recommended for all soil types. Use a compost that\u2019s mature and screened with a fine particle size and a pH between 6.0 and 7.2. Look for these qualities on the label.<\/li> <\/ol>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most people use a mixture of the three to save money. Reed Santee, vice president at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centralhomesupply.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Central Home Supply<\/a> in Scotts Valley, California, has been supplying landscape materials since 1974. He&#8217;s a big fan of adding compost to your lawn for long-term health.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Topsoil is essentially inert,&#8221; Santee says. &#8220;It adds volume but little biology. Quality compost actually feeds the soil food web already living in your lawn. That&#8217;s the difference between a lawn that looks better short-term and one that actually builds healthier roots over time.&#8221;<\/p>    <h2 id=\"2-choosing-the-best-topdressing-material-for-your-soil-type\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span id=\"choosing-the-best-topdressing-material-for-your-soil-type\">Choosing the best topdressing material for your soil type<\/span><\/h2>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll want to use a topdressing material that\u2019s comparable to your current soil. If you make a drastic change, you will ruin your yard. Santee warns that putting sand over a <a href=\"https:\/\/lawnlove.com\/blog\/how-to-fix-compacted-soil\/\">heavy clay lawn<\/a> is a guaranteed disaster.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cClay already struggles to let water move through it,\u201d Santee says. \u201cAdding sand without deeply amending the clay itself creates a perched water table right at the interface. Roots sit in that saturated zone and rot. The fix isn\u2019t more sand, it\u2019s amending the clay profile first with <a href=\"https:\/\/lawnlove.com\/blog\/how-to-compost-for-lawn-and-garden\/\">organic compost<\/a> before any topdressing happens.\u201d<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To determine <a href=\"https:\/\/lawnlove.com\/blog\/soil-types\/\">what kind of soil you have<\/a>, grab a handful of damp soil from your yard and rub it around in your hands.<\/p>    <figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>How the soil feels<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Soil type<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Topdressing material<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Sticky<\/td><td>High clay content<\/td><td>Compost<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Gritty<\/td><td>High sand content<\/td><td>Sand and compost<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Fine, soft, slightly damp<\/td><td>Loam<\/td><td>Topsoil and compost<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your primary goal is fixing a bumpy, uneven lawn, pure compost will not hold up.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;For leveling a bumpy lawn versus just feeding it, your mix needs to shift toward something with more structural consistency,&#8221; Santee says. &#8220;I&#8217;d lean toward a sandy loam blend. The sandy loam component settles predictably and holds grade. Pure compost compresses differently in different spots and can leave you with new bumps within a season.&#8221;<\/p>    <h3 id=\"3-how-much-material-do-you-need-for-topdressing\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span id=\"how-much-material-do-you-need-for-topdressing\">How much material do you need for topdressing?<\/span><\/h3>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To amend a home lawn, a \u00bc-inch layer of topdressing is recommended. That means you need 0.77 cubic yards of material to topdress 1,000 square feet. It can block topdressing materials (along with water and other nutrients) from ever reaching the soil.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If thatch is thicker than \u00bd inch, <a href=\"https:\/\/lawnlove.com\/blog\/how-to-dethatch-lawn\/\">dethatch<\/a> it first. Throwing down grass seed now guarantees the topdressing will speed up seed germination.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Santee says combining aeration with topdressing is the ultimate cheat code for a healthy lawn.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe timing is everything,\u201d Santee says. \u201cAeration pulls cores that leave open channels, and if you topdress immediately after, that material drops directly into the root zone rather than bridging over the surface. Miss that window and you\u2019re essentially just mulching the top of your lawn. The grass sees minimal benefit below the thatch layer.\u201d<\/p>    <h3 id=\"9-4-clear-away-debris\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span id=\"4-clear-away-debris\">4. Clear away debris<\/span><\/h3>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remove grass clippings, loosened thatch, or plugs of soil (from <a href=\"https:\/\/lawnlove.com\/blog\/how-to-aerate-your-lawn-2\/\">lawn aeration<\/a>) from the area you\u2019re going to topdress.<\/p>    <h3 id=\"10-5-spread-the-topdressing\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span id=\"5-spread-the-topdressing\">5. Spread the topdressing<\/span><\/h3>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shovel a small amount of your topdressing material over a few square feet at a time. Fling them with a motion like hitting a hockey puck to spread the material in a \u00bc-inch layer.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You want an even, quarter-inch layer. Santee says that thin layers break down much faster than heavy piles.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThin, even applications work into the soil noticeably faster than thick uneven ones,\u201d Santee says. \u201cScreened compost breaks down faster because the particle size is uniform. Chunky, unscreened material creates air pockets and stalls the process.\u201d<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You also need to verify the quality of your compost to avoid planting a yard full of <a href=\"https:\/\/lawnlove.com\/blog\/common-lawn-weeds\/\">weeds<\/a>.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCheap material often hasn\u2019t reached the internal temperatures needed to kill weed seeds,\u201d Santee says. \u201cI\u2019d specifically look for <a href=\"https:\/\/lawnlove.com\/blog\/how-to-make-switch-to-organic-lawn-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">OMRI-certified compost<\/a>. That certification tells you the product went through a legitimate process, not just a pile sitting in someone\u2019s yard.\u201d<\/p>    <h3 id=\"11-6-rake-and-water-the-topdressing-into-the-lawn\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span id=\"6-rake-and-water-the-topdressing-into-the-lawn\">6. Rake and water the topdressing into the lawn<\/span><\/h3>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gently rake in the organic material after spreading, then water your lawn thoroughly to help it settle into the soil.<\/p>    <h3 id=\"12-7-leave-your-lawn-alone\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span id=\"7-leave-your-lawn-alone\">7.
