Drip irrigation systems ensure that <a href=\"https:\/\/extension.umd.edu\/resource\/drip-irrigation#:~:text=they%20are%20very%20efficient%20compared%20to%20overhead%20watering%20methods%20because%2090%25-95%25%20of%20the%20water%20goes%20into%20the%20soil.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">90% to 95% of the water reaches the soil surface<\/a>. When you water with overhead sprinklers during the day, you may <a href=\"https:\/\/hgic.clemson.edu\/factsheet\/landscape-irrigation-management-part-5-irrigation-time-of-day\/#:~:text=In%20addition%2C%20water,from%200.7%20inches.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lose 20% to 30% of the water<\/a> that you apply. That means if you apply 1 inch of water, only 0.7 to 0.8 inches will reach your plants.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re curious how drip irrigation compares with overhead sprinklers, here are a few facts. With <a href=\"https:\/\/edis.ifas.ufl.edu\/publication\/AE048\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sprinkler irrigation<\/a>, several factors can negatively impact your water efficiency:&nbsp;<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Humidity levels (greater evaporation in drier air, less or none in moist air)<\/li><li>Wind<\/li><li>Height of sprinkler&nbsp;<\/li><li>Distance of spray<\/li><li>Water droplet size (influenced by water pressure and nozzle design)<\/li><li>Air temperature<\/li><li>Solar radiation<\/li><\/ul>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll often hear experts advise gardeners or grass aficionados to do their overhead watering early in the morning, before the sun comes up. That\u2019s because there is high humidity, no sun, and air temperatures and wind speed are low. During the day, you may lose 20% to 30% of your overhead water, but in the early morning hours, that water loss goes down to about 15%.&nbsp;<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"1-2-save-cash\"><span id=\"2-save-cash\">2. Save cash<\/span><\/h2>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, how much will this save you on your water bill? It varies greatly by region, but think of it this way: If you lose 20% to 30% of your water by using a sprinkler in the middle of the day, that also means <strong>20% to 30% of that cost is spent on water that never reaches your plants<\/strong>. Eroded soils are often deposited in bodies of water, such as streams or bays.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Runoff:<\/strong> When water isn\u2019t absorbed into the soil and flows into a storm drain or body of water. This water often carries sediment, pesticides, phosphates, and fertilizers, and deposits them into these drains or bodies of water.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reducing erosion and runoff helps maintain the integrity of our soils and our water supply. <strong>With drip irrigation, these problems are virtually eliminated<\/strong>. Set your watering schedule to deliver the proper amount of water for your plants and soil type to eliminate erosion due to overwatering.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Note: <\/strong>Water, wind, ice, and gravity may cause erosion in your lawn, ornamental bed, or garden, but drip irrigation shouldn\u2019t contribute to this problem. This means there won\u2019t be as many weeds to compete for water and nutrients.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Make sure the spacing between emitters or holes matches your plant spacing to ensure the best water efficiency. It\u2019s the best way to deliver more water directly to your plants and to avoid watering the weeds.<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"4-5-discourage-disease\"><span id=\"5-discourage-disease\">5. Discourage disease<\/span><\/h2>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s another way the design of drip irrigation helps your garden: it discourages disease. The drip hose applies water at the base of the plant. The result? Leaves stay dry. In short, when you reduce the amount of time the leaves are wet from dew or water, fungi and pathogens are <a href=\"https:\/\/pddc.wisc.edu\/2021\/04\/01\/april-2021-water-water-everywhere-but-never-ever-on-the-leaves\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">less likely to cause disease<\/a> in the plant.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pro Tip:<\/strong> Add mulch to further reduce diseases and encourage plant health. Mulch not only reduces evaporation but also prevents water from splashing on the plant\u2019s lower leaves. Without mulch, <a href=\"https:\/\/extension.msstate.edu\/publications\/information-sheets\/the-plant-doctor-watering-and-plant-disease#:~:text=splashing%20water%20droplets%20move%20pathogen%20%E2%80%9Cseeds%E2%80%9D%20short%20distances.%20the%20splash%20carries%20the%20%E2%80%9Cseeds%E2%80%9D%20from%20the%20soil%20to%20lower%20plant%20leaves%2C%20from%20the%20lower%20plant%20leaves%20to%20the%20upper%20plant%20leaves%2C%20and%20from%20one%20plant%20to%20another.%20the%20%E2%80%9Cseeds%E2%80%9D%20may%20move%20longer%20distances%20by%20windblown%20water%20droplets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">water splash can carry pathogens<\/a> from the soil to the lower leaves. These pathogens then spread up the plant and across to other plants.&nbsp;<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"5-6-save-time\"><span id=\"6-save-time\">6. Save time<\/span><\/h2>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You automate your bill pay, calendar reminders, and Amazon deliveries, so why not your garden, as well? Are there disadvantages of drip irrigation? <\/strong> <p class=\"schema-faq-answer\"><br\/>We\u2019ve focused on the pros of drip irrigation in this piece, but there are a few cons, or disadvantages, as well. <br\/><br\/>&#8212; <strong style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">Upfront investment:<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\"> If you\u2019re a gardener, you probably have a watering can at home. Watering cans get the job done, although not as efficiently. So, if you want to try drip irrigation, you\u2019ll have to make an upfront investment in parts and hoses. Filters and emitters will clog and hoses can accumulate debris.
