This kind of material does not draw moisture out of the soil and does not damage already stressed roots.&#8221;<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Be careful not to overdo it.<\/strong> \u201cToo much <a href=\"https:\/\/lawnlove.com\/blog\/what-is-compost\/\">compost<\/a> can smother grass or leave a muddy, uneven surface. Products heavy on manure or high in salts can add more stress to dry turf,\u201d Mercer warns.<\/p>    <h2 id=\"8-dont-fertilize-a-drought-stressed-lawn\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span id=\"dont-fertilize-a-drought-stressed-lawn\">Don&#8217;t fertilize a drought-stressed lawn<\/span><\/h2>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Avoid <a href=\"https:\/\/lawnlove.com\/blog\/lawn-care-fertilizer-basics-what-to-look-for-in-your-fertilizer\/\">nitrogen-heavy fertilizers<\/a> during a drought.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;There is not enough moisture in the soil to properly dissolve the fertilizer, so the concentration of salts around the roots becomes too high and the roots begin to dry out,&#8221; Hulstein explains.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFertilizer burn usually shows up as yellow, tan, or brown streaks and patches, often in the path of the spreader or where passes overlapped. The grass can look dry, brittle, and scorched, with a distinct border between damaged and healthy turf,\u201d Mercer says.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She warns that quick-release fertilizers can burn dry grass within a day or two, while slow-release formulas might take a couple of weeks to show damage.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What to do: <\/strong>Wait until regular rainfall returns.
