The Inland Empire, also known as IE, is a region in Southern California that encompasses areas such as San Bernardino County and Riverside County. It's an area that is well-known for its art, culture, and outdoor activities. Make time to enjoy the many amenities while you are in the IE.
A Brief History of Inland Empire
Agua Mansa was the first community to be founded by the Mexicans in what used to be known as the "Inland Valley" in 1842. The small party came to the area on the Spanish Trail to start a farming community on the land. In 1862 a large part of the town was washed away in floods; however, the cemetery along Agua Mansa Road still stands and is now a museum. In 1846 a local battle of the Mexican Warœ was fought between the Americans and Mexicans, but the Americans ended up surrendering to the Mexicans in the end.
Mormons headed to the area in wagons from Utah in 1851. These settlers would be the ones to form San Bernardino in 1853 after purchasing the land from the Lugos. San Bernardino County now includes most of Riverside County. In 1856, the Mormon celebration of Independence Day competed with a more traditional event that was put on by Louis Rubidoux and his many supporters. The Mormon celebration included anti-government themes to reflect the threats the Mormons were receiving from the federal government.
A flood struck the area on January 22nd, 1862, wiping out the very first community of Agua Mansa. This was the largest flood ever to be recorded in the Inland Valley to date. The flood also destroyed the booming gold camp of Eldoradoville. However, the arrival of the rail, and Valencia and navel orange trees in the late 1800s caused explosive growth to occur in the Inland Empire. Inland Empire was also known as the Orange Empire after acres of citrus groves began to take over from Pasadena to the Redlands in the early 1900s. Today, the area is still known for the many succulent fruits that are grown there.
What to do in the Inland Empire
The area of the Inland Empire is so vast that locals and visitors will never run out of things to do. Let's take a look at some of the more popular activities in the city.
If you are looking for a place to get a drink and have a good time, Downtown Riverside is the place to go. The area has the biggest collection of taverns, clubs, and bars around, offering live bands, DJs, karaoke, and other fun times. If you have some extra cash to spend, you'll find Native American tribal casinos all over the area, such as Morongo Casino Resort and Spa.
If you have a need for speed, head to the Auto Club Speedway. You'll get to watch professional race car drivers fly around the track at 200 miles per hour. If slower vehicles are more your pace, the annual Cruisin' Reunion is hosted in the Inland Empire. Here you will get to check out one of the most popular classic car shows in all of the country.
A Cinco De Mayo Celebration is a fair that is held every year in the Inland Empire. This huge fair offers amazing Hispanic food, live entertainment, games, music, and an annual salsa contest. If music and concerts are a big part of your life, then the San Manuel Amphitheater is calling your name. This outdoor pavilion is home to dozens of musical acts from all genres throughout the year.
If you want to be part of an even bigger yearly celebration that brings in people and performers from every corner of the world, then check out Coachella. Coachella is a famous outdoor music festival that is a must if you like the music and party scene. The event has gotten so large that it now lasts two weekends.
When you think of California, you probably think hot weather and beaches. You would be right, of course! However, many people are amazed that they can actually go skiing on Mt. Baldy during the colder winter months. Many of the mountains are covered in snow and make for excellent skiing conditions. If you would rather stick to swimming while you are here, be sure to check out Lake Gregory, Lake Perris Recreation Area, Lake Hemet, or Yucaipa Regional Park for the best swimming holes. You'll find that they all offer beautiful areas for swimming that will cool you down when the sun is high.
