Come Home to a Beautiful Lawn and Garden
When you're done spending the day entertaining, you love coming home to a beautiful home. You're proud of your home and lawn, and you take care of them. When you want to achieve the perfect lawn, planning and preparation are critical to success. There are three things that every homeowner should do who wants to have the perfect lawn: thatch, aerate and fertilize. If you follow these three steps, you'll need less water to keep your lawn looking green, and you'll end up with a denser and thicker looking lawn.
Thatch Your Lawn
The first step is thatching your lawn. If you're not sure what thatch is, take a careful look at your grass. There will be a layer of dried grass, dead leaves and old roots that are decomposing; that's your thatch layer. If the layer is 1/2 inch or less in thickness, it's best for you to let the thatch remain. It contains microorganisms that benefit your grass. However, if it's a thick layer, you need to dethatch your yard. Using a thatch rake, you want to remove as much of the thatch layer as possible. Removing thatch lets more oxygen and water get to your grassroots, which is beneficial to your yard's overall health.
Spike Aeration
After dethatching your yard, you'll want to aerate. There are two kinds of aeration: spike and core aerating. Many people like to use spike aerating because of its relative convenience. Spike aerating drills holes into the ground about 1 to 2 inches deep. Generally, because the spike aeration method produces smaller holes, you want to make more of them per square foot than with core aeration. To aerate, you can purchase or rent an aerator from your local garden center. Be mindful that an aerator is a bulky and heavy piece of equipment, so you will want to get a truck and a group of friends to assist you. Of course, you can always hire a team of yard care professionals. We're here to help you with all your lawn care needs.
Core Aeration
The second kind of aeration is core or plug aerating, which is when you bore small holes into the soil about 2 to 3 inches deep. You can leave the soil plugs on the lawn, if you prefer, as they add a valuable layer of organic compost to your lawn as they disintegrate. If it's your preference, you can also rake the soil plugs and compost them. No matter which technique of aeration you choose, the results will be spectacular. Aeration is an effective way to improve the look of your lawn without spending a lot of money because the aeration allows more air, nutrients, and water to penetrate the soil. So what happens? Your grass will develop a much thicker and healthier root system.
Good Grass Seed Blends for Tampa
Within 2 to 3 weeks, you'll see a beautiful green tapestry of lawn. It will stay vividly green throughout the growing season, provided you show it the proper watering and care. You'll be happy with the results. Of course, now that you've taken the time to thatch and aerate your soil, it's a perfect time to overseed your lawn. Be sure to lay additional grass seeds and water thoroughly for optimal results. Good choices for warm-weather seeds are Zoysia, Bermuda grass or St. Augustine.
