Prepare Your Plan of Action
You can see it: the perfect lawn. To achieve the perfect yard, you have to have a plan and preparation. For you to attain maximum results you'll want to thatch, aerate and fertilize your lawn each spring. If you spend the time thatching, aerating and fertilizing your yard, you will need less water to keep your lawn looking green throughout the growing season.
First Dethatch Your Lawn
The first step is to thatch your lawn. Not sure what thatch is? Take a careful look at your grass, and see if there's a layer of dried grass, dead leaves and old dry roots at the bottom of your turf grass. That's thatch, and it needs to be removed if there's more than a 1/2 inch of it on your lawn.
Keeping too much thatch chokes your yard's grass because it inhibits oxygen and water from nourishing your lawn. Be sure to use a thatch rake or regular rake and remove as much thatch layer as possible. There's a good chance when you're finished that your turf will look pretty torn up. Don't worry, as it's only temporary. As your rejuvenated lawn begins to sprout, your yard will look better than new.
Aerating Gives You A Luxury Yard
There are primarily two ways to aerate your yard: spike aerating and core or plug aerating. For spike aerating, there are a variety of tools you can purchase or rent from your local garden center. Keep in mind that it doesn't cost much money to rent an aerator, but it is a bulky machine that is heavy to move. You will need a truck and some friends to move the aerator, or you could hire a team of lawn care professionals like us for your seasonal yard care needs. We're here to assist you with all your yard care needs throughout the year. The spike aeration technique requires that you drill holes into the ground surface, generally to a depth of approximately 1 to 2 inches.
Spike and Core Aeration Types
The second kind of aeration is core or plug aeration. With this technique, you dig small holes about 2 to 3 inches deep below your soil's surface. Because the plug aeration goes a bit deeper into your grass's roots, the results generally last longer than with spike aeration. When you have pulled the dirt plugs from the soil, you can leave them in the grass, as they act as organic compost in your yard and they'll disintegrate in just 2 to 3 weeks.
You can use either kind of aeration, and you'll have results that look terrific. Aeration helps to break up the soil, allowing small pockets of air, nutrients, and water to reach your grassroots. What will you see? You'll see a much greener and more densely growing lawn that will stay greener into the hot temperatures of the summer and autumn.
Fertilize For the Greenest Lawn
Once you've thatched and aerated your yard, you want to be sure to fertilize before planting your new layer of grass seed. Be sure to research your fertilizer choices, and pick the one that is high-quality and slow-release that has a nitrogen base. Using a slow-release type helps to prevent fertilizer burn that browns your lawn.
