If you want a healthy, lush lawn, then you first need to start with the basics. Here are a few of our most useful tips for mowing your Florida lawn!

The Importance of Mowing

Mowing remains one of the most important aspects of lawn care and maintenance for homeowners because, if done right, it helps to increase the density of your lawn, produce a lawn that is more resistant to disease and pests, and just plain makes it look good. Practicing proper mowing techniques, including frequency and cutting height, will determine whether or not your efforts succeed.

Mowing Height

How do you know what the proper mowing height of your lawn is? Well, first you need to know what type of grass you have growing in it! In Florida, there are generally six types of grass growing in a lawn. They are:

  • St. Augustine — The most popular choice in Florida lawns, it tolerates droughts well and has an ideal mowing height of 3.5 to 4.0 inches.
  • Bermudagrass — This grass grows well in hot climates, which makes it another popular choice in Florida. It also stands up well to heavy traffic but is best kept at a height between 0.5 inches and 2.0 inches.
  • Bahiagrass — This grass grows well in sandy soil, hence it's popularity in parts of Florida. It also stands up well to drought with an ideal mowing height between 3.0 and 4.0 inches.
  • Centipedegrass — This is a great low-maintenance choice in Florida since it grows slowly and generally requires less mowing. Its ideal mowing height is between 1.5 and 2.0 inches.
  • Buffalograss — This grass does great in heat and drought and can grow well in a wide range of soil pH. It should be kept between 1.5 and 3.0 inches.
  • Zoysiagrass — This grass can grow in many different types of soil and can tolerate shade and salt spray quite well. It also grows slowly, making it easy to keep its height between the recommended 1.0 to 2.0 inches.

How Often to Mow

Now that you know what kind of grass is growing in your Florida lawn, you can determine how often you need to mow. A lot of things can influence just how fast your grass grows, from weather to the time of year. The slowest growth usually happens in the winter months, while the fastest occurs in the summer.

Low-maintenance grasses, such as centipedegrass and bahiagrass, require less frequent mowing than more rapidly growing grasses, such as bermudagrass. The goal of your mowing should be to leave as much as the leaf blade as possible so that your grass can convert sunlight into food. That's why you should cut off more than one-third of the height of the grass at once. Understand what height is ideal for your grass and aim to keep it there — that's what determines the frequency of your mowing.

Keep those Clippings!

When it comes to grass clippings there are usually two camps of people. In one camp you have the people who think leaving the clippings is unsightly and contributes to thatch problems. In the other camp, you have people who are more than happy to leave their clippings and go on their merry way. Do you know which camp you should be in? The one that leaves their clippings!

The clippings are an important source of nutrients for your lawn. They will slowly break down over time and feed your lawn along the way, reducing the need to add fertilizer. That means less work for you and more food for a healthy and thriving lawn — a win-win situation, really!

You can rest assured that leaving clippings on your lawn won't create a problem with thatch. Clipping decompose quickly, so unless you have a bunch piling up in one spot on your lawn, it's not going to cause any problems.

A Few More Tips

To be a mowing maven there are a few more tips that we at Lawn Love like to follow. You should:

  • Make sure to sharpen your mower blades at least once a year
  • Never mow turf that is wet, only when it's dry
  • Mow a different direction each time you mow
  • Pick up sticks, stones, or other things on your lawn before mowing for your safety
  • Wear heavy leather shoes when mowing
  • Adjust cutting height on your mower when you're near the sidewalk or driveway

Now you're ready to get mowing! But don't forget that the pros at Lawn Love are always here to give you a hand!
