All About Kansas City
Kansas City was established in the 1830s. It began as a Missouri River port due to the Kansas River that came flowing into the town from the west. The town of Kansas was then incorporated in 1850; shortly after that, the Kansas Territory was established. Because of the confusion between the two names, Kansas City was decided on as a way to distinguish the two from one another.
Right before the beginning of the U.S. Civil War, the area of Kansas City was teeming with animosity. The state petitioned to enter the Union successfully. They became a free state, and because of this, slavery was no longer permitted. Since Missouri had a lot of slaves, slavery sympathizers began to cross into Kansas as a way to sway this state into allowing slavery.
When the Civil War was over, Kansas City began to see rapid growth in population. It also lost its Southern identity. Octave Chanute designed the Hannibal Bridge, which caused a population explosion when it was opened. George Kessler, a well-known architect, guided Kansas City into becoming an example in the City Beautiful movement, due to the fantastic network of parks and boulevards he created.
The city expands over 319 square miles, which makes it the 23rd largest city in the country. While a good deal of the town can be found within Jackson County, other portions spill into the Cass, Clay, and Platte counties. Visitors will see that Kansas City is made up of a few different neighborhoods. In the south lies the Country Club Plaza, while the 18th and Vine District is in the east and the River Market District is in the north.
