Lawn Care Made Easy in OFallon
O'Fallon, Missouri provides many opportunities for its residents to view and enjoy the pleasures of being around trees and grass and to participate in activities that are held in that environment. That's because the city, which is about 30 miles west of St. Louis, has eight parks that encompass more than 450 acres.
Zumwalt Park and the First European Settler
Because of these parks, residents can enjoy aquatic activities, a variety of sports, baseball and softball, historic sites and more. One of the parks is Fort Zumwalt Park, which occupies about 48 acres. Within it is Zumwalt's Fort.
It's named after Jacob Zumwalt who let his neighbors seek shelter in his large log home when they were under attack by Native Americans during the War of 1812. Zumwalt was the first settler of European descent in the area.
Historians say that his homestead was completed in 1798, and was surrounded by a large stockade fence. The structure on the site now is a 2015 reconstruction of Zumwalt's cabin.
Other Things To Do in Zumwalt Park
Also in Zumwalt Park is the historic Heald Home, which the city restored in 2001. Prominent citizen Darius Heald built this two-story brick home between 1884 and 1886. Visitors can tour it, as well as Fort Zumwalt to see the original woodwork. Many also come to the park to play disc golf at The Fort, its 18-hole disc golf course.
Walking and Water Sports in Civic Park
On the 20 acres of Civic Park are trails and walking paths and the O'Fallon Historical Society Log Cabin Museum. Open on selected Sundays from May to September and by appointment, at the home visitors can see a folding bed for a covered wagon, equipment from a 1950's beauty parlor and more.
Also in this park is Alligator's Creek Aquatic Center, a place for family fun from late May through early September. It features a splash pad for children, a whirlpool the whole family can enjoy, a pool with lap lanes, three water slides, a one-meter spring diving board, a bathhouse, and a concession stand.
