Behind the scenes at Red Wagon Services
If you could mow any celebrity's lawn, whose would it be?
Hank Hill. Even though he’s a fictional guy, he loves Texas and he loves his lawn. If he let me mow at his place then that would mean he appreciates the work we do.
What's your biggest lawn care pet peeve?
I really don’t have one. Given I have to choose something, I’d say it’s what we all do from time to time. Leaving things in the yard just long enough to let the grass grow tall around it while the grass dies beneath it. Then the item is moved. It makes the yard look incomplete.
Advice for anyone interested in starting their own lawn care business?
Be patient. Be willing to work a lot. I compare it to getting your own place. One normally cannot have all his/her parents have in a home immediately upon moving out. The same is with a lawn business; it takes time to build up to obtain all the equipment, routes, team, etc. A good business takes time.
What successes have you achieved from working in this industry?
This has been a good thing for me. It has strengthened the relationships I have with my sons. It has given me a chance to teach them some things I have learned. They have learned how to do much more than mowing as it has also provided an opportunity to provide for themselves as they reach their life’s goals.
What's your favorite on-the-job snack?
Being a type 1 diabetic, I tend to always keep a variety of hydration drinks and orange juice in the cooler. When I’m feeling well and want a snack on the job, I tend to reach for an apple or another type of fruit.
