When you hear the name Seattle, what comes to mind? For many people, they think of the impressive tech giants like Microsoft or Amazon that are headquartered in the city. For other people, they consider the natural beauty of Puget Sound, the evergreen forests and the mountains. Seattle is, of course, all those things and much more.
Seattle offers an abundance of incredible places to visit. Are you a football fan? Then you'll want to check out the champion Seattle Seahawks when they're crushing it at CenturyLink Field. Or maybe baseball is what you prefer? The perfect day can be spent cheering for the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park. If you're more interested in architecture and the arts, you'll want to visit the Space Needle for its incredible views of the entire Seattle downtown and Puget Sound area.
Take a stroll through the Chihuly Garden and Glass, and you will be awed by the indoor and outdoor blown glass structures you can see only there. If you haven't taken the time to appreciate the artistic genius of Dale Chihuly, you're in for a real treat. Or stop by the Museum of Pop Culture to get a fresh take on your definition of art.
When you're downtown, stop at the Pike Place Market and pick up some fresh clams or salmon. You can grill some seafood in your own backyard haven for the perfect evening's dinner. With all the many things to experience and sights to see around Seattle, you may be tempted to spend less time working on your lawn and gardens. Certainly, we can understand.
Grow a Thick and Lush Lawn
To keep your home, lawn, and gardens looking their finest, you'll need to practice a regular maintenance schedule. Of course, you want to aerate, fertilize and overseed your yard to keep your lawn in peak form. Why aerate? The act of aerating the lawn will help break up the soil, allowing more air, nutrients, and water into your soil. You'll be happy with the results, as you'll enjoy a much thicker and vibrantly colored yard once your grass has a chance to absorb more oxygen.
Fertilizer Options
In terms of fertilizers, you have many options from which to choose. Some people prefer to use synthetic fertilizers for their convenience. If using synthetic fertilizer, be sure to select a slow-release granular fertilizer that is nitrogen-based. You'll want to review the ingredients to ensure you only use a fertilizer that is environmentally sensitive, pet-friendly and child-proof.
If you prefer to use organic fertilizers, you can use compost or mulch. After you've gently aerated your lawn, carefully spread 1/4 to 1/2 inch of compost or mulch. Once you're done fertilizing, be sure to soak the ground thoroughly. Make sure you use 1 to 2 inches of water to ensure your lawn has been properly soaked, as it will promote a healthy root structure developing for your yard's grass.
Grass Blends Good for Puget Sound
After you've prepared the yard by aerating and fertilizing, merely add a high-quality grass blend. Bluegrass, fescues, and ryegrass are all excellent choices, as Seattle's weather encourages the use of cool-season grasses like these. Once your grass has begun to sprout, you'll want to practice patience. If you allow the grass time to reach a height of 2 1/2 to 3 inches before your first mow, it will thank you all summer by remaining greener in color.
More to Yard Care Than the Lawn
We recognize that there's more to maintaining your home, lawns, and gardens than just mowing the lawn. There are several factors to consider in keeping your home and yards in top condition. Be sure to give your property a thorough review, once a week or two.
Clean Gutters Every Six Months or More
Do you need gutter cleaning? With Seattle's ever-changing weather, you need to be diligent about cleaning your home's gutters regularly. Yard care professionals like us recommend you check your gutters every six months, although you will have to check more frequently if your property has a significant amount of trees.
Update Annuals and Add Mulch
Should you plant new flowers or add another layer of fresh mulch to the garden beds? Simple jobs like this make a big difference in your home's aesthetic. You'll want to trim trees and shrubbery every spring and fall to keep your property looking sharp.
Stay on Weed Patrol
What about weed control? Now that you've invested so much of yourself in keeping your yard and gardens looking their best, you'll have to stay on top of controlling the weeds so that all your hard work isn't undone. You can spray with chemical weed control or remove weeds manually. If you would prefer to remove weeds manually, you need to schedule some time for weed control each week. Or you could hire a dedicated Lawn Love professional to do your weeding for you.
Leaf and Snow Removal
Do you need leaf removal or snow removal? Just because summer has ended doesn't mean the task of yard maintenance stops. Each season brings different responsibilities from tree trimming in the spring to hanging holiday lights in the winter. If you would like more free time and less yard work, we are here to help.
