Advice for anyone interested in starting their own lawn care business?
You have to be dedicated. For me, there was a lot of sacrifice. I quit a job that was paying me very well, but I did not want to be a servant to someone else. So I built my credit up, saved my money, figured out a game plan, and set goals. You have to wake up early, try and get done early to beat the heat.
What made you want to start a lawn care service?
Most of my life I've worked for other people. I'm educated, but my career and education didn't line up. When I discovered Lawn Love, I fell in love. I always promised myself I would never deal with residential customers, because if you have 50 customers, you have to chase 50 paychecks. But when I found Lawn Love, it was a dream come true.
What do you love most about being a lawn care provider?
I am not an environmentalist by any means, but I do believe in the planet. So what I love about this industry is getting to see the transformation of the earth, in terms of the customer’s property and their investments. Overall, the experience of being out there with nature, taking care of it, and interacting with the people that happen to own it.
Do you have a lawn care specialty?
Anyone can pick up a mower and cut grass, anyone can pick up a weed whacker. But my specialty is knowing the season, the environment, temperatures, and knowing how to cut grass a specific way so it stays healthy, robust, and you don't get cross contamination. My specialty is preservation, not just the maintenance
What do you love most about your job?
I love working outside and helping people turn their outdoor space into an oasis where they can relax and escape the pressures of everyday life. Whether you want your lawn to look like a putting green or a forest glen, I want you to be proud of your yard when you pull into your driveway.
How do you beat the heat when working outside?
Water, water and more water...and a good hat.
What advice do you think most people need to know about their lawns?
Pay attention to the seasons and the weather. No two years are the same. Weed & feed in early spring and late fall. Mow often when it's warm and wet, let the grass grow a little taller when it's dry and hot, and mulch your grass clippings to feed your lawn without chemicals all summer long.
What's your biggest lawn care pet peeve?
Don't let your lawn and landscaping get overgrown and then scalp it. Like a bad haircut, all we can do is rake up the mess and let it grow back before I can fix it. Also, don't plant large shrubs and trees next to walkways and walls. Talk to a landscaper and do some research before you start planting, and schedule regular mowing and trimming to keep your yard looking good.
How do you relax after a long day?
Peace and quiet in the shade in my own oasis. Lose the boots and grab something cold to drink.
