GreenPal Review: What You Should Know About GreenPal

You might be scratching your head wondering why a major lawn care service is reviewing a competing lawn care service. It’s not a mystery. There are only a few of us who do lawn care on such a grand scale, and we still believe that competition is good.

Of course, if you ask us, Lawn Love is superior. Our customer ratings say so, for one thing. And our quality assurances lap the field.

But GreenPal has its own way of doing things. Does it work? Is it effective? What do its customers think of it? This review will answer those questions and all the other things you should know about GreenPal.

In this article

What is GreenPal?

GreenPal traces its beginnings to founder Bryan Clayton, who started a lawn mowing service in high school and grew it into a small landscaping company based in Nashville.

Inspired by the rise of Uber, Clayton sought a solution to the problem of homeowners not being able to find and book reliable lawn care services. So he and co-founder Gene Caballero reorganized the business into a freelancing platform for lawn experts.

Today, GreenPal serves most major metro areas nationwide, acting as a middleman between homeowners and landscaping companies. It’s important to note that GreenPal does not offer its own lawn care services but operates a marketplace for pros to bid on your job.

Once you establish a relationship with a landscaping company, you can book them individually for additional services such as shrub pruning or bagging of lawn clippings.

How GreenPal works

Using GreenPal’s website or app, customers can find, schedule, and pay for lawn maintenance.

How does GreenPal connect homeowners to lawn care specialists? With these simple steps:

Step 1: Visit GreenPal.com or its mobile app home page. From there, you can post your lawn care needs by inputting your address to create your lawn profile.

Step 2: Once you’ve created your lawn profile, select a date for your first service appointment.

Step 3: You’ll receive bids from various lawn care providers, generally within the first few hours.

GreenPal states that you can expect to receive five bids within 24 hours. We tested the claim using different addresses in different regions. We sometimes received five bids, but at times we received just a couple. Generally, the first bids arrived within hours of posting our information.

You can check their profiles to see reviews and photos of their previous work before choosing one to work on your lawn.

Step 4: Select a lawn care provider and confirm your service date.

Step 5: Once the job is completed, the lawn care company will send you a text message with a picture of your yard. From there, you can pay for the service and schedule future weekly or bi-weekly appointments.

GreenPal services

GreenPal specializes in mowing. Lawn care providers using the site also edge sidewalks and paved surfaces, as well as clean off hard surfaces when they’re done.

This is one of the big things that separates GreenPal from Lawn Love and competitor LawnStarter: GreenPal is fairly limited in the services it offers. You can choose mowing or snow removal. That’s basically it.

For snow removal services, you can select whether you need snow to be plowed for the entire season, opt for salting and de-icing services, and input the areas you need plowed to receive a free quote from different snow removal companies.

How do you know the job will be done right?

Is quality really that big a deal? I mean it’s lawn mowing, right? Even young kids can handle a mower.

It depends how much you care about your yard. A good lawn care provider will keep your grass looking trim and growing strong. The bad ones can do a lot of damage … if they show up at all.

So let’s look at the safeguards GreenPal has created to protect customers.

Contractor checks: GreenPal says it conducts background checks on all of the lawn care providers using its platform. This process includes:

  • Checking for valid bank account information
  • Using photos to verify the quality of past work
  • Asking the contractor to submit photos of their equipment and experience verification
  • Doing professional reference checks

Quality standards: GreenPal also requires lawn care providers to adhere to certain standards.

For example, a contractor who receives more than three customer complaints in a month is fined $30.

In addition, you don’t have to pay for your service until you confirm that it has been completed to your satisfaction.

GreenPal prices

GreenPal’s website is pretty vague about the range of prices you might pay for mowing services. That’s understandable to an extent, as prices vary by lot size, region, and other factors.

Generally, however, mowing prices start at $25 and up for a standard quarter-acre lot. That includes edging and blowing grass clippings off patios, walkways, and driveways.

GreenPal vs. competitors

Like competitors Lawn Love (yours truly) and LawnStarter, GreenPal serves most of the United States, but customers give GreenPal a slightly lower rating than Lawn Love on three consumer ratings websites (more on that in the User Reviews section below).

Here’s a look at the three major competitors head to head:

GreenPal user reviews

Customer feedback is an essential tool for determining whether a company fits your needs and satisfies its clients. We turned to sites like Trustpilot, Sitejabber and Appgrooves because they don’t allow companies to purchase ratings, keeping their reviews as unbiased as possible. Fortunately, there are over 3,000 reviews between the three sites.

  • GreenPal has a consumer rating of 4.6 out of 5 stars on Trustpilot
  • GreenPal has a consumer rating of 4.2 out of 5 on Sitejabber
  • GreenPal has a consumer rating of 4.0 out of 5 stars on Appgrooves, a platform that reviews mobile apps

Reviewers gave GreenPal high marks for the simplicity of its website and app. And when the lawn pros came as scheduled, customers generally seemed pleased with the work.

However, the majority of negative reviews focus on missed appointments and poor customer service. Reviewers complained that they had trouble getting hold of anyone at GreenPal if the job was done poorly, if they were overcharged, if something was damaged, or if they were otherwise unhappy with their service.

Here are some samples of both positive and negative user experiences from both review sites.

FAQ about GreenPal

Can you order lawn care service once a month?

No, the vendors that work with GreenPal are only available for weekly or bi-weekly mowing services.

What happens if it rains on your appointment date?

When you schedule a service, you can delay the service up to three days for rain. The vendor you hired will keep you notified of any further modifications to your service date in case you experience a prolonged period of rain.

Our verdict: What we liked and didn’t like about GreenPal

GreenPal’s goal is pretty similar to Lawn Love’s: to help homeowners connect with good lawn care professionals. And most customers are pleased with the results. But when something goes wrong, it’s a different story. Customers find GreenPal’s customer service a bit lacking when their service doesn’t go as planned.

What we liked

  • Flexible service: When scheduling your lawn care, you have the options to delay your service by one, two, or three days. This allows vendors to reschedule in the event of inclement weather or other issues.
  • Easy to use: GreenPal’s website and app guide users through the process quickly. You can create your lawn profile and receive your first bids in minutes.
  • Vetting of lawn care pros: GreenPal puts lawn care providers using its marketplace through a basic vetting process.

What we didn’t like

  • You’re mostly on your own when problems arise: GreenPal is just a middleman and doesn’t exert much control over lawn care providers using its platform. If a client has an issue with a provider, you have to try to resolve it yourself.
  • Customer service issues: According to client reviews, GreenPal’s customer service department is difficult to reach. The website doesn’t list a phone number or email address for customer service, though GreenPal does respond to reviews regularly.
  • Limited services: GreenPal’s primary focus is on connecting you with lawn mowing providers. However, if you need other services, such as tree trimming or hedge clipping, you’ll have to negotiate with the landscaping company separately for an additional charge.

Our other knock on GreenPal is that it doesn’t offer a full array of outdoor services. Your yard is more than just a lawn, after all. Trees need trimming, leaves need raking, flower beds need mulching. Lawn Love and competitor LawnStarter do those things and more. GreenPal doesn’t offer those as standard services.

So if you just need your lawn mowed, GreenPal is an option but certainly not the best. There are better options out there for quality mowing and total yard care (Lawn Love and LawnStarter, to name just two).
