ENHULK recently released a show-stopping string trimmer—the 58V 16″ Pro Series with a carbon fiber shaft. We tested it on two yards to provide you with a comprehensive string trimmer review.

It’s the most potent battery-powered weed eater we’ve ever tested, with more cutting power than many gas models. We rate the trimmer’s performance, durability, useability, and cost and clearly explain why we gave it each rating. Then, we give our final verdict, followed by a string trimmer buying guide.

Performance

Its performance is superb. The trimmer is powerful, skillful, and precise. It also has a lengthy runtime and seamless speed control.

Speed control

Out of all the battery-powered models I’ve reviewed, the ENHULK 58V trimmer has the best speed control.

It has a variable speed trigger and three preset speed modes:

  • Eco mode lengthens the trimmer’s run time and provides precision around delicate landscaping. I did most of the trimming on Eco.
  • High mode works well in wide-open areas with unruly weeds and grass.
  • Turbo mode takes the cake when it comes to cutting through excessively thick overgrowth.

The speed controls are easy to read and reach, so you can seamlessly adjust its speed while you’re working. The ENHULK 58V 16-inch trimmer adapts to various lawn care tasks, including edging and heavy-duty trimming.

Cutting performance

The ENHULK trimmer is the most potent battery-powered string trimmer I’ve tested. It trimmed my entire yard in about 12 minutes.

With its fierce force and 16-inch cutting width, heavy-duty trimming becomes child’s play.

Its carbon fiber shaft is long and lightweight, so you can reach hard-to-hit weeds without any stress.

The icing on the cake is its pro-grade 0.095-inch dual twist trimmer line. With thick string and superb speed control, the trimmer line barely breaks.

The included line didn’t break, not one time, in my yard. It stands strong when trimming extremely thick vegetation.

The line broke a few times along Jeff’s chain-link fence but held up a bit better than the typical 0.095-inch string. I completed his 1-ace yard using about 10 feet of trimmer line. Jeff was ecstatic because that’s about half the line his gas-powered string trimmer goes through.

The trimmer effortlessly slices through dense areas of extensive overgrowth.

And quickly cuts crisp edges.

Battery life

The trimmer’s 58-volt, 2.5 Ah battery lasts up to 45 minutes on a single charge. With its lengthy run time and quick cut time, most homeowners can complete their entire yard on one battery charge.

Assembly

Assembly is simple. It only requires one tool, a Phillips screwdriver. I assembled the trimmer in less than 10 minutes.

The battery simply slides into place, and the trimmer’s quick-release button makes it easy to remove the battery.

The same battery fits additional ENHULK 58V series tools, including their Pro Series 900 CFM Cordless Leaf Blower. I also tested their leaf blower. Its strong blow force and variable speed make clean-up a cinch.

Adjustments

The ENHULK 58V 16″ Cordless Electric String Trimmer easily adjusts without using tools:

  • Handle: You can change the position of its auxiliary handle to suit your size and comfort.
  • Shaft: The extra-long shaft folds to half its height, making it easy to store and transport.

Line feed

To add a new spool, you needn’t disassemble the trimmer head. Just insert the trimmer line and turn the dial. While working, feed fresh string with two or three head taps.

Comfort

It’s comfortable for most users, big or small. I’m 4’11” and about 120 pounds. Jeff is 6 feet tall and over twice my size. I let him try the trimmer, and we both found it equally comfortable.

Michelle Selzer | Lawn Love

Weight: It’s the lightest 16-inch string trimmer that I’ve ever seen. With a carbon fiber shaft and advanced brushless motor, it’s the lightest in its class. I can lift it single-handedly.

Vibration: The low-vibration brushless motor combines with vibration-dampening carbon fiber to increase your comfort.

Noise level: Dampened vibration, an efficient motor, and twisted trimmer line reduce the trimmer’s noise level.

Auxiliary handle: The adjustable D-shaped handle has a satisfying grip.

Arm support: You can comfortably rest your arm while trimming.

Durability

ENHULK’s flagship trimmer is as strong as an ox with its carbon fiber shaft, reliable motor, and hefty trimmer head. The tool’s warranty is slightly longer than the average battery-powered string trimmer.

Carbon Fiber Shaft

Made of carbon fiber, its shaft is stronger than the man of steel. In fact, carbon fiber is about 500% stronger than steel and twice as stiff. It’s also about 400% stronger and 70% stiffer than aluminum.

Carbon fiber is highly resistant to chemicals, heat, and pull force. Due to its strength, stiffness, and resilience, scientists expect carbon fiber parts to last longer than 50 years.

Brushless Motor

The trimmer has an advanced brushless motor that’s low-maintenance, robust, and reliable.

My buddy Jeff Yochum is a lead technician at Ring Container Technology. He inspected the trimmer’s motor and said it’s well-protected and high-quality. The motor is housed in aluminum alloy and kept cool by a dedicated fan.

The trimmer head is tougher than a tax collector. Throughout my trimming, I was hard on the head. It’s still as good as new.

Warranty

The ENHULK 58V 16″ String Trimmer has a 4-year tool and a 2-year battery warranty.

Most battery-powered string trimmers have a 2- to 5-year tool warranty and a 2- to 3-year battery warranty. The average tool warranty is about 3.6 years.

Price

It costs less than other high-performance battery-powered string trimmers, offering consumers much bang for their buck.

Buyer’s Guide

To buy the best string trimmer, savvy shoppers pay attention to the following specs:

Power source

When shopping for a string trimmer, consider the pros and cons of each power source:

  • Gas-powered string trimmers provide the most cutting power, typically giving the best bang for your buck. Many homeowners with big yards shop for the best gas string trimmers. However, they’re loud, high maintenance, and pricey for pint-sized yards. They also emit pungent gas fumes.
  • Corded electric string trimmers are the most affordable. They’re emissions-free and can run indefinitely. However, they only work if plugged into an outlet, limiting the area you can trim. The best corded electric string trimmers are ideal for homeowners with small yards and budgets.
  • Battery-powered string trimmers are conveniently cordless. Like corded trimmers, they’re low maintenance and emissions-free. Among the best battery trimmers are models for every yard size and budget. However, they cost more than corded models, have limited runtime, and some models have a lengthy charge time.

Cutting swath

String trimmers with a broader swath trim your yard faster. A trimmer’s cutting swath (i.e., cutting width) describes the diameter of its cut. The broader a trimmer’s swath, the wider the area it cuts with each pass.

AiDot’s ENHULK 58V string trimmer head with cutting swath
Michelle Selzer | Lawn Love

Gas-powered string trimmers tend to have the widest swath, as shown in the table below.

Power sourceTypical cutting swath
Battery-Powered12 – 16 in.
Corded 13 – 17 in.
Gas-Power13 – 20 in.

Cutting line

When comparing cutting line, consider the following:

  • Line diameter: Select a string trimmer compatible with cutting line that’s thick enough to handle your lawn weeds. Most residential weed eaters use 0.065 to 0.095-inch string. Thicker lines cut through denser vegetation.
  • Shape: The most common trimmer line is round, but multi-side lines (e.g., square or star-shaped) make crisper cuts. Twisted trimmer line is quieter than standard string and more durable along metal fences.
  • Material: Trimmer line is typically nylon, but some use stronger nylon blends. Cutting lines containing glass, composite, or metal are generally more durable than standard string.

The table below shows typical string sizes by trimmer type.

Trimmer typeTypical line diameter
Corded electric trimmers0.065 – 0.080 in.
Battery-powered trimmers0.065 – 0.095 in.
Gas-powered trimmers0.095 in.
Commercial trimmers0.095 – 0.155 in.

The best weed eater string depends on your string trimmer model,  yard, and budget.

Shaft

String trimmer shafts differ in style and material.

Shaft styles:

  • Straight shafts are the most common and the most durable.
  • Curved shafts are more affordable than straight shaft models but are typically less durable and have a shorter reach. However, it’s easier to trim around landscaping with a curved shaft.
  • Telescopic shafts adjust in height, helping homeowners get the perfect reach.

Shaft materials:

  • Steel is strong but heavy and prone to corrosion. Stainless steel costs more but is less likely to corrode than carbon steel.
  • Aluminum is lighter than steel but heavier than carbon fiber. Although steel is stronger by volume, aluminum is stronger by weight. Thus, aluminum shafts are typically more durable than steel shafts. Models with an aluminum shaft tend to cost more than those with steel.
  • Carbon fiber is the strongest, stiffest, and lightest shaft material. By weight, carbon fiber’s about five times stronger than steel and four times stronger than aluminum. However, trimmers with a carbon shaft tend to be the most expensive.

Weight

Lightweight weed whackers are more comfortable to carry, especially when trimming for extended periods. Smart shoppers select a string trimmer that they can handle without facing fierce fatigue.

Average weight of a string trimmer10 lb.
Typical range6 – 14 lb.
Lightest4 lb.
Heaviest25 lb.

Corded electric trimmers are typically the lightest, and gas models are the heaviest, as shown in the table below.

Power SourceTypical weight
Corded electric5 – 9 lb.
Battery-powered6 – 14 lb.
Gas-powered10 – 15 lb.

Weight vs. Performance: High-performance string trimmers are typically heavier than light-duty models. Trimmers with a broader cutting swath, larger engine, or bigger battery weigh more than their weaker counterparts. Homeowners with large yards must find a good balance between weight and potency. Many models connect to a shoulder strap for added support.

The next table breaks down weight by cutting width.

Cutting swathTypical weight range
10 in.4 – 7 lb.
12 in.4.5 – 9 lb.
13 in.5 – 10 lb.
14 in.6 – 12 lb.
15 in.7 – 17 lb.
16 in.10 – 15 lb.
17 in.10.5 – 16 lb.

Cost

Most residential string trimmers cost $70 to $325, but some are as affordable as $50 or as expensive as $700.

Average cost of a string trimmer$200
Typical price range$70 – $325
Most affordable$50
Most expensive$700

Corded electric trimmers tend to cost significantly less than other models, as shown in the table below.
