Kentucky bluegrass has the best cold tolerance out of the cool-season grasses grown in the Great Plains. Commonly found in home lawns, Kentucky bluegrass is a great option for western and central Nebraska, where winters have heavy snowfall, strong winds, and extremely cold temperatures.

Kentucky bluegrass is famous for its elegant, dark green foliage. But keep in mind that this beautiful turf has high-maintenance needs, including fertilization, dethatching, and full sun exposure. Learn how to care for this grass in our article: “Kentucky Bluegrass: How to Grow and Care for It.”

The only warm-season grass recommended for Nebraska, buffalograss can adapt statewide. If you are looking for low-maintenance turf, buffalograss may be a great option for you. After its establishment, buffalograss has almost no need for irrigation, making it a great choice for western Nebraska lawns (which get less rainfall than the eastern part of the state).

However, be mindful that because it is a warm-season turf, buffalograss has a shorter green period when compared to other cool-season lawns you may see in your neighborhood. While Kentucky bluegrass lawns have green foliage from April to November, buffalograss’s green period goes from June to October.
