South Jersey Planting Zones

South Jersey’s planting zones range from 7a to 8a, which means that the lowest annual temperatures are between 0 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit. Much of south Jersey in planting zone  7a, but the west and the coast are warmer.

Knowing your planting zone, also known as a hardiness zone, is essential to seeding grasses and plants that will thrive here in south Jersey. Plus, different areas require varying levels of care. Here’s all about south Jersey’s planting zones.

Hardiness zone 7a: Southeast Jersey

In south Jersey’s hardiness zone 7a, temperatures don’t go down below 0 to 5 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s found in much of the state, including:

According to the state of New Jersey, it’s debatable whether Ocean and Monmouth counties count as south or central New Jersey. If you count them as south Jersey, then take note that, for the most part, they are in hardiness zone 7a:

Hardiness zone 7b: West Jersey and the coast

In hardiness zone 7b, temperatures rarely drop below 5 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit. This climate is most common in coastal areas. It’s also more prevalent in the western parts of South Jersey. Here are a few examples of where you can find hardiness zone 7b:

Again, it’s debatable whether Ocean and Monmouth count as southern or central new Jersey. But these two counties also have a hardiness zone of 7b in some places:

Hardiness zone 8a: The southeast coast

In hardiness zone 8a, temperatures rarely drop below 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit. Only small parts of southeast Jersey are in hardiness zone 8a:
