If you want an attractive, healthy lawn, you must know your grass type because each requires slightly different maintenance. Warm-season grasses thrive here in Central Alabama because they withstand the summer heat and deal well with both soaking rains and dry spells. You likely have one of these:
Mowing frequency: Grass in Northport grows most of the year but grows fastest in the spring and summer months. We recommend mowing once a week, in the mornings, and just once every two to three weeks during the winter.
Mowing height: Each variety prefers a slightly different height. For instance, St. Augustine and Bahiagrass like to be mowed to around 2 inches, while Bermudagrass should be kept at 1-1.5 inches. Whatever variety you have, it’s best not to cut more than a third of the grass length at each mowing.
Watering: During the hottest months, your lawn should get water every three days or so, including rainfall. Make sure it gets an inch to an inch and a half of water a week. Skip watering during rainy periods. Mold and other diseases can form if grass stays wet for too long.
Aeration: Aerate once a year to loosen compacted soil so the ground can soak up air, water, and nutrients like a sponge. The best time to aerate is during the fall.
