Lawn Care Hacks for People Who Hate Lawn Care

Lawn Care Hacks for People Who Hate Lawn Care

Let’s face it – not everyone has a green thumb, or even the desire to develop one. There’s no shame in that! Life is busy and full of a lot of things to do outside of working on your lawn. If you’re not enthralled by lawn care but you also don’t want to look like you live in an abandoned house, then these lawn care hacks are for you and your Indianapolis lawn.

Lawn Care Hack No. 1: Toss and Grow

You probably pass a hundred perfectly manicured lawns a day with beautiful and flawless flower beds with nary a weed in site. That’s all well and good for people that enjoy gardening, but there’s also nothing wrong with going out, buying a bunch of seeds, tossing them in a sunny spot and then just…watching. When you’re carving pumpkins this Halloween, or cutting up a watermelon on a hot summer day, you can also toss out the seeds and see what happens – you might just be surprised!

Lawn Care Hack No. 2: Keep the Critters Away

No matter the level of involvement you have in your lawn, no one wants critters to invade what they do have. A great, and natural, deterrent for animals is coffee grounds. Instead of throwing your coffee grounds in the trash, sprinkle them around the plants wild animals seem to target in your lawn. Not only do coffee grounds keep critters at bay, they’re also a natural fertilizer, so two birds with one stone and all that.

Citrus peels also work well!

Lawn Care Hack No. 3: Salt the Weeds Away

If you have an area you aren’t planning on planting anything in the foreseeable future you can use salt to get rid of weeds and keep them from growing back. Any cracks in your driveway or between paving stones that seem to make a great home for unsightly weeds can be sprinkled with salt to rid the area of weeds forever! OK, maybe not forever, but for quite a while.

Just remember that salt can build up in soil and cause issues for the plants you do want to keep around, so take care not to get salt mixed in with (or wash it into) places you have plants growing.

Lawn Care Hack No. 4: Maintain Your Mower with Cooking Spray

Lawn mowing is something nearly everyone has to do and one of the most annoying things about it is when grass clippings get stuck together in the undercarriage of your mower. Fortunately, there’s a hack for that! All you have to do is take some cooking spray and apply it to the undercarriage of your mower. This helps to prevent grass clippings from sticking and gunking up your mower, and creates less work for you because you don’t have to take the time to scrape it all out!

Lawn Care Hack No. 5: Watering with Wine

Remembering to water your plants might not be one of your strong suits, but there’s a hack for that! If you’ve got some wine bottles laying around don’t send them out with the recycling, instead use them as automatic waterers. All you have to do is take an empty wine bottle, fill it with water and then stick it upside down in the soil next to the plant and voila! Your plants will never have to go without water again.

Of course, it goes without saying that the ultimate hack for people who don’t like lawn care and maintenance is to hire someone else to do it, but if you’re not quite there yet use some of these hacks to help make things a little easier!
