As a home or business owner in Riverside, you want to keep the exterior of your property looking great all year long, so you need to know the best landscaping tricks to make that happen. Even if you hire an Inland Empire lawn service company to take care of your yard's needs, you'll want to learn the principles of maintaining a lawn in order to keep it lush and green all year round.
The first step is to understand the climatic conditions of Riverside, CA, then learn the grass and garden plants that the climate supports. Riverside is located in California, which has frequent fluctuations in temperature. Whereas the summers are hot, the winters are quite cold and dry. If you are looking to develop and maintain a healthy lawn, you need to find plants that agree with the local climate conditions.
Grass types for Riverside, CA
Due to the fluctuating weather, picking a grass-type for your lawn can be a challenge.
Bermuda grass is a tropical grass that does well in hot and humid areas. It is a tough and fast-growing grass-type. It has a grey-greenish appearance with short blades and flattened stems and has great drought tolerance. Bermuda grass grows best in the summer and goes dormant in the winter. You need to mow it frequently during the growing season because it grows quickly.
Fescue is a cool-season turfgrass that has narrow green blades. Fescue is a popular grass-type because it doesn't need to be mowed or fertilized as often as other grasses. There are two varieties of fescue grass, fine fescue, and tall fescue. Tall fescue has deep-seated roots that give it better resistance to drought and weeds.
Zoysia is perfect for California soil because it is drought and salt tolerant. It is a fine-textured and elegant grass-type that is ideal for home lawns. It tolerates a wide range of temperature and moisture. It is not as tough as Bermuda grass, but it forms a dense turf that supports a huge amount of foot traffic.
Native plants in Riverside, CA
The best way to reduce the maintenance costs for your lawn is to have plants that grow naturally in California.
Desert willow s is a little flowering tree that can add color to your lawn. It has long, slender leaves and pink flowers. The desert willow only grows to about 30 ft. tall which makes it easy to accommodate in small lawns.
Common lippia is a low growing perennial, with long linear stems that spread on the ground to form a dense network of carpet-like vegetation. Fully developed common lippia plant network looks like a lawn. However, it is grown for decorative purposes because it does not support foot traffic.
Incense cedar is an evergreen conifer that belongs to the cypress family. The name incense came about because the leaves of the tree emit a specific smell when bruised. It can grow up to 30 meters tall when fully developed. This large tree has a straight bark and its timber is used for carpentry.
Feather bush is a large shrub that eventually grows into a small deciduous tree with low branches. Feather bush shrubs are normally about 14 ft. tall but the trees can reach a maximum of 25 ft. They produce white flowery balls during spring and can be a beautiful addition to a botanical garden or any residential landscape.
Ashy leaf buckwheat is a light-gray shrub that grows to about one meter tall. It has wavy-edged leaves and clusters of pink flowers hanging from its stem. This plant naturally grows all through the California coastline.
