Californians will tell you the fun and sun in their state is much more than glamorous beaches and Hollywood. Of course, they get loads of tourists, but their advice is to live like the locals and check out a few great California events and festivals. Northern California above Sacramento is where you'll find some of the most interesting. Look for reggae festivals in Humboldt County. It's in the area of the scenic Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. To experience the thrill of a real rodeo, it's an easy drive south down to Truckee. It's an hour and a half to Reno if you must visit a casino, and you'll pass by parts of Lake Tahoe on the way.
Back on track, it's a quick four-hour trip to Sacramento and their famous Sacramento Grilled Cheese Festival. You'll find plenty of wine and beer tastings, too. Speaking of wine, Napa Valley is only a little over an hour away. The annual events around Napa are practically non stop and most revolve around food, wine, and music. It's a picture- postcard area, and you'll want to return often.
Heading south to San Francisco, you'll find that the people are busier and the events are more sophisticated. If the timing's right, you can attend events all summer long as part of the San Francisco Jazz Festival. There's no other jazz festival quite like this one. They feature big names in jazz like Sonny Rollins, Gilberto Gil, and Branford Marsalis.
Don't leave Southern California off the agenda. You'll find festivals and events here every bit as full of local flavor as those in Northern California. The beach culture is significant in this part of the state. You'll find festivals related to surfing, buildings sand castles, and seafood. One of the most popular is the San Clemente Ocean Festival. Called “The Biggest Show on Surf,” activities include a surf race, sand castle contest, a family concert and barbecue, and an ocean art show. The US Open of Surfing at Huntington Beach is another big name event. It's a great spectator sport, and you will likely see some of the world's best athletes participating.
One of the most endearing events in Southern California is the Tall Ships Festival held for two days in September at Dana Point. Old-school sailing ships fill the bay. At the end, they all sail together in a grand water parade. There's also arts, crafts, maritime workshops, and other events.
