Before the Spanish conquerors entered California, the area of Spring Valley belonged to the Kumeyaay people. When this indigenous group had control over the land, they referred to it as "Meti" or "Neti." Then, in the early 1860s, Judge Augustus S. Ensworth of San Diego claimed the ranch that was a part of what is today Spring Valley. He also built a house and later sold it to Rufus King Porter. After Porter, historian Hubert Howe Bancroft purchased the land, and today it is one of the most treasured locations in Spring Valley. The house is also a National Historic Landmark. For those under 18, Spring Valley has elementary schools and middle schools that are governed under the La Mesa-Spring Valley School District, while the Grossmont Union High School District provides our public high school education.
