Did you know that Folsom, California is home to 50 miles of paved bike trails? Many of these trails are in riparian forests, greenbelts and wildlife habitats. Others follow creeks and streams. Mountain biking and hiking trails can be found in the Folsom Lake State Recreation Area.
Favorite paved trails in Folsom include:
American River Bike Trail
The American River Bike Trail follows the American River from Discovery Park and ends in Folsom. It is 32 miles in length and is popular with bicycle riders and runners. A common sight along the trail is kayakers making their way down the river. There are restrooms and water fountains along the way.
Humbug-Willow Creek Trail
This trail is named because some of it is along Humbug and Willow Creeks. It is 32 miles of trail that has many access points within the city. It joins Folsom Lake, Alder Creek, Lake Natoma, and the Empire Ranch Road. It passes beside dredge tails from gold mining operations and forests.
Lake Natoma Trail
Although Google Maps will argue the point, the Natomas Lake Trail is not a part of the American River Trail. It follows Lake Natoma and passes river rock piles from gold mining dredging. There is a lot of wildlife to be seen along the trail and plenty of trees. The bridges over Willow and Alder Creeks are wood-decked. This trail will take you to the Folsom Lake State Recreation area boat launches at Willow Creek and Nimbus Flats.
Oak Parkway Trail
This trail is just 2.2 miles in length, but it allows cyclists to travel from west to east in the city. The path winds over gentle hills, mostly through residential neighborhoods and stays in sight of plenty of large oaks and other trees. There is the BT Collins Park along the way. The Oak Parkway Trail provides easy access in the east at Blue Ravine Road to the Humbug-Willow Creek Trail.
The trails in town are less strenuous since they are either flat or gently rolling. In the Folsom Lake State Recreation Area, there are more trails to explore. These are more strenuous. Some are best suited for mountain biking, while others are hiking and running trails. They include:
Pioneer Express Trail
This is a 14.1-mile trail that is narrow and is primarily used by horseback riders but is also used by hikers and trail runners. There are some stream crossings, and the trail follows the shoreline of the lake.
Brown's Ravine South Shore Trail
A 13.1-mile trail that is suitable for intermediate mountain biking and mostly shaded. The trail affords excellent views of the lake and access to rolling meadows.
Sweetwater Trail
This trail affords views of Folsom Lake and is suitable for hiking and trail running as well as for mountain biking. Mountain bikers need to be aware that there are some rocky sections to this trail.
