Lakewood lawn care

Lakewood, CA is a city in the Los Angeles Metro area with over 80,048 people according to the last census. It has been called an "instant city" because it popped up within just a decade during 1950-1960 from farm fields to a fully developed city.

History of Lakewood

Lakewood was a classic post-World War II American suburb. It was a planned community developed by Ben Weingart, Louis Boyar, and Mark Taper.

This community attracted veterans coming back from World War II with its mass-produced homes and the government's no money down, low-interest mortgages. Between March and April of 1950, more than 1,000 families had purchased one of these homes and started moving in.

Lakewood was one of the fastest developed suburbs in American history. The population grew from farms to a city virtually overnight. Eventually, the community grew to over 70,000 when the population voted to officially incorporate as a city in 1954.

Economy of Lakewood

Among its top employers include Long Beach Unified School District which employs over 900 residents and represents over 5% of the total employment in the city. Second is Lakewood Regional Medical Center and the City of Lakewood.

The household median income in this community is $58,214, only slightly higher than the US national median household income of $56,516. Even though the median income is higher than the national median, the cost of living index is about 80% higher than the national average.

The cost of living in Lakewood is even 10 points higher than the rest of California. For example, the median price for a residential home is $581,400. That's about $33,000 more than the median price across all of California.

The Lakewood Lifestyle

Living in Lakewood is much like other cities in the Los Angeles and Orange County area. Lakewood is north of Long Beach and only a 30-minute drive to some of the prettiest beaches in the world.

Being only 23 miles from Los Angeles proper, it has also become a bedroom community for those commuting into LA. It is also close to Long Beach Airport and The Gardens Casino.

Popular Lakewood Events

The Lakewood Civic Center puts on a block party, and fireworks show every year on the July 4th weekend. It includes all of the things you'd imagine at a festival like this.

They have kid's entertainment, vendor booths promoting the local restaurants, and live music. It concludes with a massive fireworks display over the Lakewood Center Mall.

The Pan American Fiesta is also a popular local attraction. It features foods and culture from both North and South America. The event includes food from South America, crafts, and rides. This annual festival was started by a couple of members from the Lakewood Lion's Club back in 1945 and has gone on ever since.

Grass Types in Lakewood

Growing grass in Lakewood can be difficult. The hot, dry climate makes it difficult for grass to stay healthy and even alive. Here are some grass types that are resilient under this type of arid climate and would have the best chance to survive in a city like Lakewood.

Native California Bentgrass: This is one of the most common grass types in Southern California. It is native to the region and has evolved to withstand the extreme climate here. It can survive hot sun and cool shade. It can also survive without much water.

Bermudagrass: This type of grass is commonly used in golf courses and parks in the area. That is because it can withstand heat and drought, but also foot traffic. Many types of grass will die quickly if people step on them. Bermudagrass will stand up even after a ruckus soccer game.

Sand Dune Sedge: The easiest grass to maintain in this climate is the Sand Dune Sedge. It grows on the beach where weather conditions and soil can be harsh. It also doesn't require a ton of TLC to keep it looking good.
