Kent lawn care

Kent is located in the Seattle area of Washington. It's the sixth largest city in the state and the second oldest city in King County after Seattle. It is a place with a largely residential, community-oriented atmosphere. Within its borders lie a diverse combination of scenic parks, trails, and places for recreational and professional sports.

Kent's History

Kent was settled by Europeans during the mid-1800s. The earliest inhabitants settled along former water body called the White River, the first inhabitant is believed to be a man named Samuel Russell. Russell sailed to and acquired land in what is now modern-day downtown Kent. The city underwent several name changes before it was called Kent. First, it was called "White River." Next, it was named "Titusville" after the arrival of another earlier settler named James Titus. In fact, an interesting bit of trivia is that there is still a sign in Kent today near First Ave. that says "Titusville Station," which marks the place where the first train station was constructed in town. Kent finally got its third and final name in 1861 with the construction of the first official post office.

Although Kent was founded by many different people from various places, they shared one main economic activity: farming. For years, commercial farming and crop exports were the main economic force in Kent. Over the years, the types of crops successfully grown in Kent were largely influenced by the weather. During the 1860s and 1870s, for instance, the primary crops grown were hay, alfalfa, timothy, barley, and wheat. Grains were also grown successfully in the local climate. Later, hops became a primary crop grown in the area. However, the area's crop production was halted temporarily by an aphid invasion during the 1870s and 1880s. Dairy production and lettuce farming joined the ranks as Kent's economic drivers through the early part of the 1990s and until World War II.

After WWII ended, Kent saw a shift in the economy from a primarily agricultural and farming to industry. Following the war, the aeronautical industry became popular and prominent in the neighborhood. Technology companies followed it after that, which still dominate Kent's economic landscape today.

To celebrate and protect its diverse history, a historical society was established in 1992 to protect Kent's historical assets and create means for the public to learn more about them and in turn develop a greater appreciation.

Modern Attractions and Activities

While Kent certainly has a rich and interesting past, it also has many great attractions for people to explore today.

Hydroplane and Race Boat Museum

Boating is a popular sport in the area, as evidenced by the fact that there is also a museum dedicated to the popular pastime. This museum is proud to be the only museum in the US that is dedicated exclusively to powerboat racing. It features a number of permanent exhibitions along with regular seminars and talks where visitors can learn more about the different types of powerboats, the history of the sport, and its application to the Kent area.

Morrill Meadows Park

The Seattle area is very dog-friendly, and the Morrill Meadows Park reflects that. This popular park has several separate areas for dogs to play, including an area reserved for smaller and more timid dogs. The park features parking lots on two separate ends for convenient access. In addition to providing a nice oasis for dogs, its scenic splendor and natural beauty is appreciated by human visitors, too.

Soos Creek Botanical Garden

This botanical garden features a stunning display of natural and imported flowers, trees, and grasses. In addition to several themed floral gardens, it also has a vegetable garden and gardens showcasing flora designed to live in specific micro-environments, such as native woodlands and ravines. The botanical garden also includes a heritage center where visitors can learn more about the local plant populations and the natural history of the area.
