How to Achieve the Perfect Backyard Haven
If you're ready to get serious about maintaining a beautiful lawn, it may be necessary for you to consider aerating your yard. What's aeration? When you aerate, you're drilling holes into the ground to loosen the soil and the root system of your grass. Aerating allows more air, nutrients, and water to reach the grassroots. You'll see the benefits of aeration within 2 to 3 weeks. Be sure to water your yard generously, using 1 to 2 inches of water the day before aerating. It will make the job go much smoother.
Just as you need to breathe, your grass also needs to get a breath of fresh air to flourish. There are primarily two types of aeration: spike and core. Spike aeration can be done by wearing aeration shoes and walking around your expanse of lawn, although this method of aeration will admittedly do only a superficial job.
Using a Spike Aerator
If you rent or purchase a rotating aerator, you'll be able to drill much deeper into the soil and get better results. However, you need to consider that the aerator is a heavy and bulky piece of machinery, so it would be a good idea for you to ask some friends to assist. Of course, you can always consider hiring a team of lawn care professionals like us to help in this crucial lawn care maintenance task. After all, we're here to help you.
Using Core Aeration
The second kind of aeration technique is core, or plug, aeration. With this technique, you use a small corer, which looks like a thin, rounded garden spade. You will want to dig narrow holes in your lawn, at intervals of a few inches. The soil plugs can be left in the grass, as they begin to decompose almost immediately and will disintegrate entirely within 2 to 3 weeks. It's beneficial to your turfgrass if you leave the soil plugs, as they provide needed organic microbes that help to nourish your grass. Alternatively, you can rake the soil plugs and compost them, if you find them too unsightly.
Using the spike aeration technique will result in holes that are approximately 1 to 2 inches in depth, and the core technique will create holes that are about 2 to 3 inches deep. Either aeration technique will significantly benefit your grass, although if you choose spike aerating, you'll want to repeat the process more frequently to keep your lawn in optimal condition. When you break up the soil and let the roots breathe, it promotes healthy growth. The result? You'll see a lawn that's denser and lusher, with a more vibrantly green color. What's even better is that the green color will last longer into the growing season, even as the temperatures begin to climb.
How to Know if Your Lawn Needs Aeration
1. Does your lawn get a lot of foot traffic, like children playing in the yard or when you are entertaining company on the patio? If your lawn sees heavy traffic, you should consider aerating.
2. Do you have a recent home renovation, where there has been vehicle traffic on a portion of your yard? Any traffic by people, pets or vehicles will compact the dirt, so you should aerate to keep your lawn looking its best.
3. When you water or irrigate, are there places where water pools consistently? If that happens, you may consider aerating your yard - or at least, aerate the patches of soil where the water pools. Water pooling is an indication that the soil is compacted and needs aerating.
4. Does your soil have a heavy clay or sand content? Most of the Los Angeles area does, and as a result, you need to aerate the soil more frequently.
