    What's your favorite grass variety?
Kentucky Blue Grass. It's the most common in my CT, and it is a hearty grass that grows thick and strong. Stays green for most of the year, and is very resilient.

If you could mow any celebrity's lawn, whose would it be?
None..But, I'd love to mow the lawn at the White House.

Have you ever rescued a lawn from certain death? How did you do it?
I have rescued several from the effects of poor practices by other providers. It takes more than just a lawn mower, and a weed whacker to be successful.

String trimmer, weed whacker, weed eater, or weed whip?
Weed whacker. Weed eater is a brand name, they are all string trimmers, and I've never heard it called a whip.

How did you get into lawn care?
By accident actually. My business opened as a small engine equipment sales and service provider. I started mowing a few lawns on the side to supplement that, and grew from there. The rest is history!

Understanding your grass type

The right grass variety can make all the difference in how healthy and vibrant your lawn looks because each type has different needs. With Ellington’s freezing winters, your lawn needs a tough turf. That’s why cool-season grasses are the best choice. Common varieties include:

  • Tall fescue
  • Kentucky bluegrass
  • Perennial ryegrass

Lawn care tips for Ellington

Fertilize: Grass clippings work as fertilizer, but most lawns need a nutrient boost. Apply a slow-release fertilizer during the growing season for warm-season grass types and in the spring and fall for cool-season grasses.

Aerate annually: Improve soil compaction and nutrient absorption for healthier roots with annual aeration. The best time to aerate your lawn is during its growing season.

Check soil pH: Most grass types grow best in soil with a neutral pH range of 6 to 7. Alkaline and acidic soils hinder nutrient absorption and foster weed growth. Test your soil annually to determine its pH and add amendments accordingly to correct it.

Dethatch annually: Thatch is the layer of dead grass and organic matter that builds up near the soil in between your healthy grass blades. While some thatch is beneficial, our pros recommend dethatching one to two times per year, depending on your grass type. Dethatching reduces pest problems and increases water and nutrient absorption.
