Dormont is a suburb of the Pittsburgh-Metro Area. Dormont has a diverse area, with a mix of middle-class families, young professionals, and retirees. Dormont possesses unique economic stability, often attributed to its demographic diversity as well as to jobs in nearby Pittsburgh. Dormont also has a diverse selection of housing and low crime rates.
Dormont's quaint business district is very pedestrian-friendly, with cobblestone streets and turn of the 20th-century buildings. There are plenty of coffee shops, bars, restaurants, and retail shops to keep the folks of Dormont busy all weekend long.
History
The Dormont area was home to the Shawnee and Delaware tribes until 1768; at that time, the territory was purchased by Fort Stanwix from the Six Nations.
Dormont was originally made up of sections of Union and Scott Townships. In 1909 Dormont was incorporated, and officials at first wanted to name it Mount Lebanon. However, some community members objected, and the township was named Dormont, loosely translated as "Mountain of Gold."
Once Dormont was incorporated, nearly three dozen streets were renamed. Today, every street except two are designated as avenues. The two exceptions are Memorial Drive and Park Blvd.
Dormont Fun
Throughout the years, Dormont's convenient location, as well as its amenities, has kept the borough densely populated.
Dormont is the proud home of one of the largest swimming pools in the state of Pennsylvania. The historic Dormont pool covers 60,000 square feet. The pool began in 1920 when Andrew Philp dammed a creek to create a wading pool. In 1922, the borough enlarged the dam to make a swimming pool as well as an ice skating rink and also built a small bathhouse. In 1923, the borough transformed it into a concrete swimming pool, adding sand along the edges to resemble a beach, giving the pool a tropical feel. The historic Dormont Pool survived the Great Depression, persevered through World War II, and has remained open every year since it opened in 1920. In 2002, the pool was declared a Historic Landmark.
Dormont also has two municipal parks, with tennis and basketball courts, two Little League baseball fields, a library, and a very amazing children's playground, built by volunteers. The playground at "Castle Park" is, of course, shaped like a castle. The all-wood play castle is replete with alcoves, bridges, and towers. There are also monkey bars, rings, swings, and slides. It is truly a kid's dream come true.
The summer highlight is "Dormont Day," the annual Fourth of July celebration. The event takes place in the municipal parks, beginning with a 21-Gun Salute at 8:00 a.m. It's a full day of family entertainment, with live music, food booths, pony rides, games, and the Little League All-Star game. The day of family fun ends with a spectacular fireworks display.
The Borough also hosts an annual Dormont Street Fair and Music Festival in the fall. The Street Fair has two stages of live music, as well as food and craft booths.
