If you want a good quiz question, ask if they know what Pasadena, Texas has to do with California. Pasadena, TX was actually named after the city of Pasadena, CA. It was given the same name because its uncommonly lush, beautiful landscapes resembled the same fertile lands of California. Today, both places have a distinct history and past.

Pasadena's Rich History

Pasadena was founded in 1893 but wasn't incorporated until the 1920s. While many places in Texas were settled by pioneers and families heading west, Pasadena has its roots in Native American history. Present-day Pasadena was settled by several tribes in the Gulf Coast region. They are the Atakapan, Karankawa, and Akokisa tribes. According to legend, the area later served as a refuge for the pirate Jean Lafitte, who established naval bases and hideaway areas in the region.

The area's abundant natural beauty, which still exists today, was brought about by its early settlement patterns. Through the encouragement of land grants, the US government enticed prospective settlers into the area during the mid-1830s. This brought a wave of settlers, as intended, and sparked the growth of Pasadena's ranching culture. The first ranch was established in 1843 with 350 acres of land. It was started by Sam Allen, and became known simply as the "Allen Ranch."

Today, Pasadena is also known for its growing population size and impressive growth. This foundation was set in the 1800s with the construction of the Galveston, Houston, and Henderson Railroad that ran right through the center of town (and the Allen Ranch). Over the years, Pasadena put itself on the map as a place with economic potential for fuel and heavy industries, notably petroleum. A space center developed by NASA in 1963 brought a more residential and community feel to the area.

What to do in Pasadena

Pasadena certainly has a rich past, but its present-day life is equally enriching. These are just a few of its "can't-miss" attractions.

Pasadena Museum of History

This museum is the only one of its kind that is dedicated to celebrating the art, culture, and history of Pasadena. In addition to having a museum on site that's open for the public to tour, the Pasadena Museum has a research library for collecting and continuing to preserve the history of the area. Also onsite is the Fenyes Mansion that has an original art collection and beautifully preserved original paintings.

Pasadena Little Theatre

Despite its name, the Pasadena Little Theatre is a big attraction. This theatre, which dates back to the mid-1950s, is one of the oldest operating theatres in the Houston area. It still features year-round shows including a rotating list of plays and musicals. Aspiring actors and actresses can attend workshops at the theatre to improve their acting skills.

Armand Bayou Nature Center

A real escape from the fast pace of daily life, the Armand Bayou Nature Center is undoubtedly an excellent place to go to enjoy some peace and quiet. While exploring the nearly five miles of hiking trails, it's quite likely that visitors will spot one of more than 370 species of animals that live in the nature center's boundaries. This includes a chance to see bison from the Bison Observation Deck. With its family-friendly Discovery Loop Trail and a "Children's Discovery Area," the nature center is a family-friendly place that inspires all ages to discover and appreciate Pasadena's impressive natural beauty.

Strawberry Festival

Pasadena has historically had the open land and climate conducive for growing a variety of crops. In 1900, many of the area's crops were wiped out by a strong hurricane that devastated Pasadena and its agricultural economy. Donations came in to residents through the Red Cross. One of the most valuable contributions proved to be strawberry plants. The plants grew well in Pasadena's warm, sunny climate and fertile soils. This success led to the formation of the first strawberry farm, where the plants were harvested for commercial sale. Today, strawberries still grow in abundance in Pasadena. An annual Strawberry Festival featuring arts and crafts, live music, a carnival, plenty of strawberries, and the world's largest strawberry shortcake, takes place in May each year.
