Helena is a suburb of Birmingham, Alabama, with a population of more than 18,000. It's one of the best places to live and raise children in the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Area; in 2007 Business Week ranked Helena as the 13th "Best Place to Raise Your Kids". Likewise, Helena has the eighth-lowest crime rate in the country, and moreover, it ranked at number 91 in Money magazine's 2007 list of "Best Places to Live: Top 100". Finally, the Alabama League of Municipalities gave the town the 2008 award for Municipal Achievement Award. Needless to say, Helena, Alabama, is a great place to live!

History

The area that is now Helena was the territory of the Muscogee, otherwise known as the 'Creek Indians'. While many European traders interacted with them, there was still some armed conflict with the Muscogee into the early 19th century. Most of the American settlers did not come into the area until 1849.

The first American settlers named the town Cove, and were mostly veterans of the War of 1812.

In fact, Andrew Jackson's troops were deeply attracted to the serene, peaceful streams and valleys after the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. In 1856, a post office opened in Cove, and shortly after that, the name of the town was changed to Hillsboro.

The Civil War required the South to increase its manufacturing as well as develop new industries. Iron and coal mines were opened around the area, and the Louisville. Nashville Railroad was also constructed, providing vital transportation. In 1864 a rolling mill was built near the railroad to process iron from Selma. Helena became a central industrial hub for the Southern war efforts.

The building of the railroad initiated yet another name change for the town; Peter Boyle, a railroad engineer, fell in love with local girl Helen Lee. He named the railroad station after her. The town eventually adopted the name of the train station.

Much of Helena was burned to the ground during Wilson's Raid, on March 30, 1865. However, the town was quickly rebuilt after the war, as industrialists once again showed interest in the abundant coal and iron deposits. By 1880, Helena had one drug store, six mercantile stores, two hotels, and several boarding houses.

Helena fell on hard times during the 1930s; the rolling mill and many of the mines had closed. Many had to leave town to find work. Then on May 5, 1933, around 3 AM, a massive tornado ripped through town, killing twelve people, with 75 more injured. Railroad cars were overturned, and many of the original homes were destroyed.

However, Helena has proven itself as the little town that wouldn't die. By the 21st century, Helena had grown again, providing its residents with a high quality of life.

Parks and Recreation

Helena has numerous parks, featuring open spaces, playgrounds, fishing, and a baseball field. The Helena Sports Complex has a community center as well as baseball and softball fields, basketball courts, soccer fields, and cheerleading. Two of the most popular parks are Cahaba Lily Park and Joe Tucker Park.

Along the banks of Buck Creek sits the Old Town Helena Amphitheater. The amphitheater features a stage and grass seating where all kinds of productions are staged, including the 4th of July Festivities and the popular free movie event, Summer Sundown Cinemas.

Buck Creek and the Cahaba River run through town. Buck Creek is dammed near the Old Town area, forming Lake Davidson. Both the creek and the lake are popular for wading, swimming, fishing, and canoeing.

As you can see, Helena is a top-rate place to live. Neither wars or economic depression could keep the little town of Helena down for long! You deserve to not only live here but to enjoy the spirit of the place. Instead of mowing the lawn and trimming bushes all weekend, why not go out and have some fun?
