Clarksburg's History

Unlike many cities, Clarksburg was not established at one precise period in time. Instead, its development progressed in a series of stages. Its earliest roots can be traced back to the mid-1850s when the first American settlers arrived after searching for a place with ample land. The climate and land availability proved to be a perfect combination for the initial settlers in Clarksburg. They quickly established a vibrant economy based off of farming and agricultural endeavors. Less than 20 years later, the city received its first official post office. The post office, however, initially listed the city as "Clarksburgh." It wasn't until nearly 20 years later that the city's name was changed to its current name of "Clarksburg." In both spelling variations, the city was named after a man named Robert Clark, who was one of the first settlers to appear in the area. The city's growth continued through the 1920s when a local land grant company began subdividing land plots in the area. This layout lay the foundation for the city's establishment as a census-designated area.

Today, Clarksburg is still relatively small and quaint compared to other cities in the Sacramento area. Its town center is defined primarily by two churches, a volunteer fire department, a public library, and several schools. A mill, which dates back to the 1930s, once contributed to the city's economy but now serves as a historical landmark. A winery in the area's borders, called the Bogle Winery, has earned a reputation for its award-winning wines. It is now one of the most famous wineries in the Clarksburg appellation. The wines have been sold worldwide, including at the White House. Clarksburg still has a relatively small population size today that numbers only about 300.

Wine Country

Clarksburg is perhaps most famous for its wine country, which has earned the title of the Gem of the Delta. There are about a dozen wineries in Clarksburg's wine country. Collectively, they produce more than 35 varietals. The area's climate is conducive to growing some of the most distinct and complex grapes in California, which combined with the long growing season, have created a perfect partnership for producing award-winning wines. Tours, tastings, and tasting rooms are available, but each winery's schedule is different.

Old Sugar Mill

The sugar mill located downtown, which once supplied the region with beet-sugar, ceased to operate after the 1920s. It still stands as a historical landmark, and it has since been repurposed as a place for the local wineries to offer tastings and samples. Along with about 13 wineries, there are also picnic areas outside for those wanting to make a meal out of wine tasting and pairing.

Winchester Lake

There are many great recreational areas in Clarksburg's boundaries. Among them is Winchester Lake, which is open for recreational opportunities including boating and fishing.
