Lawn Care Service in Burnsville, MN

Burnsville got its start as a rural community of Irish farmers. Now, Burnsville ranks as the ninth largest suburb in the Twin Cities area, with a population of more than 61,000.

The History of Burnsville

The town was named after one of the early Irish settlers, William Byrne. While his surname was spelled Byrne, it was recorded as "Burns," and the misspelling stuck.

Before the European settlers, The Mdewakanton Dakota tribe frequented the area, when they migrated from around Mille Lacs Lake to the area that is now Burnsville. Around 1750, Chief Black Dog permanently established the tribe at the point between Black Dog Lake and the Minnesota River; the Black Dog Power Plant now sits where the Mdewakanton once called home. There were more than 250 Native Americans at the south end of what would become Burnsville. They used Crystal Lake, recorded at the time as "Minne Elk lake" for fishing, fun, and burial. In fact, the early European settlers discovered three large burial mounds here.

However, the Native Americans ceded the land in 1851 to the United States. Many of them moved to Chief Shakopee's village, which is now the Shakopee-Mdewakanton Indian Reservation in Prior Lake. The first Europeans to settle the area were Scottish Irish and Norwegian farmers from Saint Paul.

To the people of the early 19th century, Burnsville was a long way from Minneapolis. However, in 1864, the railroad came to Burnsville, and it transformed into a resort town. Cottages were built along scenic Crystal Lake as well as Marion and Orchard Lakes in nearby Lakeville. By 1950, Burnsville was still a quiet small town, with a population of just 583 people, and the school was still a one-room schoolhouse. After Interstate 35W came through in 1960, the next twenty years experienced a massive population boom when the post-war baby boom rapidly developed the community. The decades leading up to the turn of the 21st century had to cope with managing the booming population and growth.

The Heart of the City

The downtown redevelopment project known as the "Heart of the City" is a city "smart growth" development policy. The redevelopment area covers 54 centrally located acres in Burnsville, just a few miles to the south of the Minnesota River. The Grande Market Square is the center point of the Heart of the City.

Art and Culture

The post-modern Ames Performing Arts Center is in the Heart of the City. It has two theaters, an art gallery, as well as a 1000-seat Proscenium Stage. THE GARAGE Youth Center is a non-profit teen center, which attracts both national and international music acts.

The Burnsville Fire Muster officially began in 1980, although the event had its origins in the 1970s as a parade and showcase for a resident fire equipment collector. However, the event has grown to include a big show, fireworks, and music concerts. In 2004, the events fire truck parade was named by the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest in the world.

Parks and Nature

Burnsville has 1,800 acres divided between 79 parks; 1,200 acres are preserved as Minnesota's stunning natural habitat. North of Burnsville along the Minnesota River is the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge. The Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge encompasses 14,000-acres along 70 miles of the Minnesota River.

Crystal Lake is Burnsville's main recreational lake. There, residents can boat, fish, swim, and jet-ski. The lake's park offers picnic areas, boat landings, playgrounds, walking trails, and more.

The Burnsville Skate Park is free, and open during the summer, and the Burnsville Ice Center has two big, professional-quality ice rinks.

Burnsville has a lot to offer; it's a city of both culture and nature. It would be a shame to miss out on the fun, simply because there is yard work to be done. Why not go to the Lawn Love website and enter your zip code? We'll send you custom prices and services for yard work in your area.

All you have to do is pick the services you need, that work with your schedule, and budget. Once your order is confirmed, Lawn Love will start making your lawn and landscaping chores disappear. So you can get out there and enjoy all that the Burnsville area has to offer.
