Lawn Care Service in Golden Richfield, MN

Richfield is an inner suburb of the Twin Cities area, with a population of nearly 36,000. It's nestled between Minneapolis, Bloomington, Edina and the airport to the east.

History

Richfield began in the 1850s, as a small farming community. Riley Bartholomew, a former Ohio State Militia General, was among the first settlers in Richfield. He would eventually become a Justice of the Peace in Richfield as well as a Minnesota State Senator. Bartholomew built his home on the eastern shore of Wood Lake. The 1852 Riley Lucas Bartholomew House is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is maintained by the Richfield Historical Society.

Around the same time that Minnesota was becoming a state in 1858, the residents of the area had their very first town meeting. They named the town Richfield for the fertile farmland that surrounded it. The first town hall was constructed in 1879. The first residents were a mix of Irish, German and New England families. These were quickly followed by immigrants from Norway, Sweden, and Denmark.

However, it wasn't until 1908 that Richfield was classified as a village; a village is defined as a clustered human community, centered around agriculture. Moreover, it wasn't until 1950 that Richfield residents voted to have a Mayor, council members, and a City Manager.

Richfield's population increased rapidly during the late 1940s when the farmland was sold off to housing developers. As with much of the Twin Cities area, Richfield quickly grew during the post World War II baby boom era. Richfield prospered with the influx of commuters going to jobs in the Twin Cities. Today, Richfield's population of 36,000 live within just seven square miles of parks, shops, and neighborhoods.

The Richfield Rediscovered Housing Program

Most of the single-family homes in Richfield were built in the 1950s. Likewise, the apartment complexes were built in the 1960s through to the early 1970s. The Richfield Rediscovered Housing Program seeks to encourage residents to remodel and expand their homes. The program is gradually upgrading the look of the city's residential neighborhoods; the small, post-WWII home styles are slowly being transformed into larger, more modern homes.

Employment

Best Buy, the largest electronics store in the country, is headquartered in Richfield. Best Buy employs more than 4,500 Richfield residents. Likewise, U.S. Bank is a significant employer, with 2,400 Richfield residents on the payroll.

Recreation

Richfield has 23 neighborhood parks as well as a nature preserve, encompassing more than 450 acres. The Wood Lake Nature Center opened in 1971 and covers 150-acres, and the city of Richfield runs the park. The Nature Center has a lake and native wetlands, and mixed lowland forest, as well as restored prairie habitat. The three miles of walking trails encircle the lake, and there are observation shelters, picnic areas, boat docks, and an outdoor amphitheater. It was among the first urban nature centers in the country and is home to more than 30 different mammals and 200 types of birds.

The Ice Arena features two indoor, full-size skating rinks. The Richfield Ice Arena hosts hockey games, open skating, figure skating, and broomball games, as well as community events.

Near the ice arena is the city's outdoor swimming pool. The swimming pool complex has a wading pool, a 50-meter competitive pool, and a double 28-foot water slide.
