Plantation, FL lawn care services
Most residents of Plantation FL probably don't know that before the turn of the 20th century, the land where Plantation now sits was covered under 3' of water. Before that, the native Seminoles used the area for hunting and fishing.
After much political wheeling and dealing, the Everglades in the area was finally drained. In 1909 the Everglades Plantation Company entered into a 2-year contract to establish a rice plantation in the Everglades. The contract allowed certain politicians to rent large tracts of land, as well as purchase land for $3 to $15 per acre. However, after years of battling crooked politicians and lawyers, the Everglade Plantation Company finally focused their efforts on selling off their land. The name Plantation remained, for the city that followed.
This is where Frederick C. Peters steps into the picture. He was a millionaire heir to a shoe business based in St. Louis. He moved to Florida in 1931 for a warmer climate to benefit his ailing son. Peters initially went into potato farming and cattle ranching. However, by 1944, Mr. Peters shifted his focus to planning a city. Along with planner Chauncey Clark Sr., they devised a development plan for one-acre lots with 2-bedroom homes, each with a small 20-tree orchard. Thus Plantation Florida was born.
Back then, a two-bedroom house with one acre of land and 20 fruit trees sold for $10,241. Today, the median home value for Plantation Florida is $271,200. Likewise, Plantation scores an impressive 77 on the livability scale, receiving high marks for amenities and its fabulous weather.
Over the ensuing decades, Plantation continued to grow, one housing development at a time. By 1983, the city established the 77 acre Plantation Central Park. The recreation center included an Olympic-sized swimming pool and a gym. There are also football, softball and soccer fields, as well as tennis and basketball courts.
The Plantation Historical Museum on Fig Tree Lane is focused on the complex history of this young city, and it's free. There are rotating exhibits, but the local favorite is the Christmas tree displays during the holiday season.
Also on Fig Tree Lane, the Plantation Heritage Park. This sunny city park often hosts festivals and events, such as the popular Food Truck Night, every Tuesday from 5:30-9:30 pm. In addition to the Heritage Park, Plantation has 30 more parks sprinkled throughout the city.
Just like much of Florida, Plantation has its share of golfers. The Plantation Preserve Golf Course offers a challenging 18 long holes. The golf course is also a park with more than 50 acres of preserved wetlands and more than a mile of nature trails.
Plantation is a city with a lot of diversity, people from many different backgrounds. My Jewish Discovery Place is a museum with a hands-on children's museum and knowledgeable staff. There are many displays with historical information about the Jewish religion, as well as the history of Judaism in the area. The African-American Research Library and Cultural Center in nearby Fort Lauderdale has 60,000 sq ft of unique Black history books as well as books written by African Americans.
Of course, what remains of the Everglades is still very close to Plantation. Everglades National Park is just an hour to the south. It's a nice getaway from city life, and back to primordial Florida. Likewise, Big Cypress National Preserve is an hour and a half drive to the east from Plantation.
