Beech Grove is a city sitting within a city. The larger city of Indianapolis has grown up and around Beech Grove, which is an incorporated city in its own right. As an excluded city, Beech Grove operates its own government agencies, separate from the surrounding city.

The town got its name directly from the abundant groves of beech trees that lines the river banks and populated the local woods. The town came into existence in 1906 as a company town for employees who worked at the Beech Grove Shops, a railroad repair facility that still exists today.
