Out of those residents, over 4,300 are foreign-born, consisting of Asian, Latin American and European descent. Even though Cockeysville is diverse in population, the climate can be tricky as our historical tornado activity is slightly higher than Maryland's overall average as well as 20% higher than the country's average.


Climate


Cockeysville is bordered by Loch Raven Reservoir, Timonium, and the rural side Baltimore County. Most of our commercial activity is concentrated along York Road. We are on the north side of the subtropical zone. While we experience all seasons, the summers last the longest. Our summers are sweltering and humid, but afternoon thunderstorms are also prevalent. Summers in Cockeysville run from April through November with July as the peak of humidity and heat. Like other parts of the country, January is our coldest month. Because of Cockeysville's location, our temperatures are not as high than those of the greater city. Additionally, it rains frequently, and the showers are equally spread across all seasons.


History


A historical area, Cockeysville is known for being a part of the Civil War. Research states that the Confederate army marched into the Baltimore area with the plan to cut off the city. The Confederates entered Cockeysville and destroyed the first bridge, telegraph lines, and the nearby track. Many years before the war, Cockeysville was named after Thomas Cockey and his family who helped to establish the town.


In 1725, Thomas Cockey settled in Limestone Valley. Joshua Cockey not only constructed one of the first homes in Cockeysville, but he also built the first hotel in 1810. Joshua's son, Judge Joshua F. Cockey also built the train station, which later became a train stop on the Pennsylvania Railroad. After the Civil War, Joshua F. Cockey founded Cockeysville's National Bank in 1891. He also further developed the community by constructing York Road and other long-standing structures.


Education


Today, students who live in Cockeysville attend one of the public schools under the Baltimore County Public Schools' jurisdiction, including Warren Elementary School, Padonia International Elementary, Cockeysville Middle School and Dulaney High School. Children ages 3-14 also have the option of attending the local private school, St. Joseph School. Other educational institutions include the Historical Society of Baltimore County and the Cockeysville Branch of the Baltimore County Public Library.
