History of Maple Grove
The Ho-Chunk, or Winnebago tribe, were the sole inhabitants of the area until 1851. At that time, Louis Gervais settled in the area. By 1855, Maple Grove had grown to include a town hall, church, and many homes. In 1854, Pierre Bottineau built the first wood-frame house in the Township. You can see the house today at the Elm Creek Park Reserve. The town was named for its large groves of maple trees and was a major supplier of maple syrup.
Maple Grove grew rapidly with the completion and upgrades to the Interstates and U.S. Highway 169 during the 1970s. Moreover, Maple Grove has grown to be one of the largest cities in the Minneapolis and Saint Paul area and is in fact, the fastest-growing city in Minnesota. Economy

Maple Grove is also home to the 2,000-acre Tiller Corporation and C.S. McCrossan gravel mining pit. The gravel mine has been active since the 1920s. However, the old gravel pit is gradually being developed into a commercial and residential downtown.
