The city of Yukon, Oklahoma is a moderately sized suburb of Oklahoma City. Located in Canadian County, Yukon lies in the western portion of the Oklahoma City Metropolitan Area. Initially founded in the early 1890s, the area was named after Yukon Territory, Canada, where a gold rush was booming at the time. The city became an urban center for local farmers and the site of the Yukon Mill and Grain Company, which lead to extreme industrial growth in the area. The sign atop the mill still shines, illuminating the phrase "Yukon's Best" for everyone to see. Taking the phrase to heart, Yukon consistently ranks one of the best places to live as well as one of the safest communities in the entire state.
Situated less than twenty miles west of downtown Oklahoma City, Yukon lies just north of Interstate 40. Two major state highways traverse the city in addition to historic Route 66, which intersects the Chisholm Trail on what is presently known as Main Street. Yukon is a highly desirable area, housing over 25,000 residents in an area of twenty-six square miles. Though the city is more densely populated than others, it is still undoubtedly an incredible place to live or even merely visit.
The city is decorated with multiple options for those who enjoy museums and historical sites. See fascinating vintage train cars at Yukon's Best Railroad Museum or learn about old tractors and other equipment at the Yukon Farm Museum. Take a relaxing stroll through beautiful historic downtown, or visit the Yukon Historical Society Museum and Art Center for a complete history of the town. Yukon is also the Czech capital of Oklahoma and home of historic Czech Hall - which annually hosts the Oklahoma Czech Festival and country music festival Rock the Route.
Yukon certainly isn't lacking in outdoor entertainment options though, as the city offers a number of sports facilities, parks, trails, and much more. Taylor Park Sports Complex houses the Yukon BMX Raceway, which allows spectators to enjoy free racing entertainment in addition to offering first-time riders the opportunity to try out the track. Kirkpatrick Family Farm hosts several events throughout the year - including the city's Easter celebration and Chisholm Trail Crawfish Festival - as well as being the perfect place for some good ol' family fun. Another of Yukon's popular attractions is Chisholm Trail Park. While the city maintains more than ten public parks/sports facilities, the Chisholm Trail offers stunning views as one of the area's best places to walk/run. The park also hosts the annual July Fourth Freedom Fest and Yukon's Concerts in the Park - both of which are local favorites.
Education is a top priority of Yukon residents, and the community has established a highly-acclaimed, award-winning school system. The Yukon Public School District serves the city of Yukon as well as portions of Oklahoma City and Banner. Originally consisting of only a small, one-room frame building, the district first opened to students in 1891. Yukon Public Schools (YPS) consists of a total of eleven schools including seven elementary schools, two intermediate facilities as well as plans to construct another, one middle school campus, and one high school. Additionally, Yukon Public School District can further serve students through its Virtual Middle and High School, Bridges Academy, YALE, and MOVE programs.
