The Round Rock that we know today isn't the same place that its settlers knew. Back then, it went by a different name. In 1851, what we know as present-day Round Rock was called "Brushy." This name, while not the most glamorous, was derived from the city;s proximity to Brushy Creek. The name change, which was officiated in 1854, was somewhat forced. The city's postmaster received notice that the name was to be changed due to the fact that there was another town nearby already called "Brushy."
As you might expect from a Texas town steeped in history, Round Rock has many significant landmarks. They range widely from important natural structures to sugar-coated pastries. Even though they are all unique, these landmarks are an essential part of Round Rock's identity.
The (Natural) Round Rock
While not every town and city in the US has a name with significant meaning, that's not the case with Round Rock. There is a round rock in the city. Now a historic landmark, it was once a low-water crossing point for wagons, cattle, and horses that traversed the creek in the 19th century. Today, this symbolic rock no longer helps pioneers and cattle cross the river at the lowest point. However, it does still serve as a famous landmark that draws thousands of visitors - residents and tourists alike, each year.
Round Rock Donuts
Texas is known for its food, and Round Rock offers a stop that can't be missed for foodies. This stop is called Round Rock Donuts. It is a donut shop established in the mid-1920s that has gained a cult following ever since. This donut shop is unofficially declared the "best in Texas" by thousands of patrons. However, it's also received high-profile acclaim from major television networks. It's also been featured on the television show "Man vs. Food." On any given day, the shop might make more than 200 donuts of its best-selling donut alone!
Most people associate California as being the nation's technology headquarters. But right in Round Rock, you'll find the headquarters of Dell. Within these headquarters, Dell Computers employs nearly 13,000 people. Sam Bass Memorial
Like many places in Texas and the American West, Round Rock can trace some history back to a famous outlaw. In this case, that outlaw is Sam Bass. Sam Bass is a legendary outlaw and robber in the Old West. Born in Indiana, he was responsible for killing a local sheriff named A.W. Grimes. Injured in the same fatal gun exchange, he died three days later.
While it has plenty of landmarks that pay homage to its distinct past, Round Rock also offers plenty in the way of modern sites and attractions.
Round Rock Express
The Round Rock Express is a baseball stadium dedicated to the Minor Leagues. The stadium is the official home of the Houston Astros.
