You may have heard of Zephyrhills Natural Spring Water. Did you know it is bottled in a small community in Florida? Zephyrhills has seven spring wells around the city. The water is shipped to stores around the world. While the natural springs are a big attraction, there are plenty of ways to have fun in the "City of Pure Water."
Located 35 miles from Tampa Bay, Zephyrhills was founded in 1910 by Captain Howard B. Jeffries. Originally, the town was meant to be a retirement community for Civil War veterans. Like most places in Florida, the city slowly developed into a spot for vacationers. The clear springs attracted people who wanted to explore the beauty of Old Florida. Zephyrhills continues to retain its small-town charm with both residents and visitors to the area.
You may only know about Zephyrhills because of the bottled water and natural springs. If you want to visit one of the famous springs, you are in luck. The Crystal Springs Preserve is one of the sources used for bottled water. The Preserve is known for its crystal clear waters. In fact, this 530-acre preserve welcomes other visitors to its water. In the winter, you can see manatees swimming in the spring's warm waters. When the manatees have left for the summer, you can still enjoy a look at the sandhill cranes and other wildlife at the Preserve. Programs are offered throughout the year to help visitors learn about the importance of the springs. If you want a look at old Florida, make Crystal Springs one of your first stops.
If you are looking to connect with nature on the golf course, you can hit the green at the Links of Lake Bernadette. This semi-private club has an 18-hole course that was designed by Dean Refram. The Links features a beautifully landscaped course with rolling fairways and tall pine trees. This course is one of Pasco County's best-kept secrets. The course was named "Best Overall Value" by Golf Digest. Once you are done on the links, you can stop by the clubhouse for lunch or grab a beer. This course is perfect for players of all skill levels.
Downtown Zephyrhills is full of history. You can take one of the local tours for a look at the town's first homes. The Zephyrhills Depot Museum is located in the original 1927 Atlantic Coast Line Depot building. You can see how the railroads played an important part in Florida's history. The museum contains exhibits and artifacts that highlight the importance of the Zephyrhills depot for various railroad lines. Also, you can learn about the other railroads that crossed throughout Pasco County.
Zephyrhills has several parks that are open for residents and visitors. Many of these parks feature picnic areas and open spaces for you to kick back and relax. Zephyr Park is the central park in the town. This 34-acre park includes the large Alice Hall Community Center, picnic tables, and barbecue grills. For those wanting a bit of exercise, you can use the handball courts, horseshoe pits, or one of five lighted tennis courts. For the little ones, there is plenty of playground equipment to use. A half mile walking path also circles the park. Zephyr Park even holds a piece of Civil War history. Many of the large oak trees date back to that era and still provide shade to modern day visitors.
If you want to see the unusual, you need to stop by Dade City's Wild Things. Located in Zephyrhills, this wild animal adventure bills itself as "not a regular zoo." They have a huge collection of exotic animals including the "Mystery Monkey of Tampa Bay." DCWT takes guests on an eco-tour of their facilities. Visitors can choose either a Safari Tram ride or a walking trek. Either way, you will see over 200 animals on exhibit. This is your chance to get an up-close look at tiger cubs, gators, and monkeys. All the proceeds of the park go back into the preservation and taking care of the animals. You can help these exotic creatures while enjoying a day out of the town.
